    Default splits setup in VS

    g'day

im wanting to install new front speakers and im thinking of going 2-way splits.

just wondering what other VS Commodore owners have done in regards to tweeter and crossover locations. is there a popular spot to mount the tweeters for good sound clarity?
also i've heard that crossovers inside door trims isn't a good idea (moisture, cluttered mechanisms, etc), so is there a better place to put them out of sight? underneath glovebox/steering column?

also, i've heard that splits generally use more power than regular speakers of their equivelant (ie. same brand and power rating), and if im running them off the H/U, would i be better with a regular speaker?

    thanks for any help

did dads vr a few months ago. tweeters i put in the dash, up the front. theres the fake tweeter vents in the corners, i dremelled the lines out and put the tweeters there.

the crossovers, theres a section you unbolt on the dash under where the door vents sit against. they fit in there just nice. ive got no pics though.

I put my tweeters on the top of the air con vents on each door. Ran the tweeter wires from the speaker pod, up behind the door skin and into the air con vent. drilled two small holes in the top of the vent, one for mounting the tweeter and one for the wire to come though. My crossovers are in the magazine rack thing right next to the speaker pod. Wasnt patient enough when i did mine to re-run wires into the doors through that rubber bit between the door and car body, so the crossovers went in the doors and i just used the stock speaker cable to hook into the crossover input.
And IMO its definately worth putting splits in.

hey thanks for the replies guys

yeah, i thought about putting the tweeters where the stock tweeters are supposed to go, but then the air con vents would be a good spot as i can have the tweeters at close proximity and direct them directly at me.

i reckon i'll try what hakhawk said and put the crossovers in the dash. i actually use the magazine racks

i'll get some pics of what i come up with when i get around to doing it

when i used to own my vs i had them installed in the place where the factory ones go, i did it for the fact it still looks stock and there no chance of knocking them, remember the treble will bounce off the windscreen. Well thats what the install man said.

    cheers

make sure u check ur crossovers regularly as another reason y crossovers r a bad place 2 put in the doors is coz of the constant opening and closing of the doors, things tend 2 come loose from it

ive got my splits in. but havnt installed the 2nd tweeter on each (i have one coaxially mounted tweeter and one not) im planning on putting mine on the dash. in regards to the crossovers in the door. do you guys think i should put even some double sided tape or something to stop vibrations? ive heard that vibrations can mess em up.

yeah i thought about that when i put them there, but havnt had any problems so far and they have been in for nearly a year, so im not too worried about it anymore.

I have heard similar things about mounting sub amps on the sub box. The constant thumping of the sub can rattle the amp internals and wreck the amp.

if you mount the tweeters on the ac vent the vent will be much more costly than replacing the demister plastic when the car is sold. people dont like a car with plastic like swiss cheese.

the easiest place to put your x-overs is on the black plastic guard under the glovebox.

My tweeters are drilled in and mounted onto the pillars about half way up. My Crossovers are mounted behind the door trims but right up near the dash.

Yeah i would say that when i sell it will be young fullas looking at buying it and they will most likely want the stereo gear anyway so i dont plan on having to replace the air con vents.

im looking at putting a whole audio system in my vs wagon. from what i can gather here, it is bad to use the stock wiring, y is that? and is it a pain if i wanted to run new wiring. i was goin to be lazy and pay for it all to be installed, but they wanted to charge me 400 bucks so i thought id try and do it myself. looks like putting the splits in the air con vents is the way to go for the lest hassel. any input would be great.

Its not necessarily bad to use the stock wiring, but people who run new wiring tend to chuck heavier duty wiring in to run amped speakers.

the stock wiring is also very old, and usually goes brittle and you could endup with more problems then solutions, if your going to the trouble of taking door trims and seats and consoles out to install speakers and amps and the such, take the extra time and run some new cabling and if possible solder them to the terminals on the speakers or buy terminal connectors.
pretty simple process, do it once, do it right, never have any worries. do it botch and thats what you'll end up with. it might work great forever, but then again it may not.
