Hey,
I have a VY II Wagon and i want to run a few things by y'all before i start hacking into the poor car.......I have been reading the forum for like a week straight but i still have a couple more fundamental questions.....
I am trying to do a relatively cheap upgrade to the factory system. So far i have a 4x50WRMS amp (AA0422) from jaycar and a high-to-low converter.
- My plan is to leave the factory head unit (for cosmetic reasons), buy a good set of speakers for the front and leave the stock ones in the rear (on recommendation - open to argument). Then i will run the fronts off 2 channels of the amp and bridge the other 2 for a 10" boxed sub that will sit behind the drivers seat (in front of the rear seat on the floor). Has anyone done this and if so can they recommend a box/sub that fits?
- What do you recommend for the fronts? good 6" 3-ways, 2-ways or splits?? Does my model have tweeters in the dash like ive heard some people on this forum talking about? As far as i have read, most 6" speakers will slot straight in right?
- I have found a how-to to get the door trims off, but can someone give me a quick run through of where the wiring runs in a 2004 VY? I want to put amp under drivers seat but this may not be feasible.
- Also what is the best way to hook-up the amp? Some people here say solder onto the rear speaker terminals then through hi-low converters to amp...... however as i am leaving the rear speakers on the stock headunit with fronts/sub from amp i still want to be able to control fade from front to back....should i solder to front terminals? or go straight from back of head unit and run new cable?
Sorry if I'm not making sense - any help would be appreciated.
cheers
j
Ok, first off, here is the wiring colours for the vy andhere is a good read on an upgrade option for the factory deck.
I personally changed my deck to a aftermarket unit and i'm very happy with the results.Put splits in the front and upgrade the rear speakers(my opinion) i found that unless you amp the stock unit you'll find upgraded speakers make little difference.
Read Phreddy's thread, definately something i would look at anyway.
Sorry, forgot to mention that i wired my speakers in by cutting and joining under the drivers side plastic door sill, just use a screwdriver to lever the cover off and you'll find 4 spline headed screws. If you don't have any spline bits just use a small flat screwdriver but make sure you use one the right size so you don't strip them off.
Thanks for replying juzo.
those articles are very helpful - i may very well get that mod done.
Thing is, i am going to amp up the front speakers, but seeing as i will leave the rear speakers stock i dont see the point in amping those up (like you said), i will just use head unit amp.
So where do you mount the splits?

Tweeters go in the dash, you'll find them in each corner near the windscreen but you'll have to remove the trim to get to them which is quite easy, just run a search as it has been covered a few times.
