I'd only go for a Pioneer to be honest, just take a look at their range see what you can afford and choose one that you like.

Sony is generally seen as overpriced for what they are.

Good brands are Clarion, Kenwood, Alpine, JVC, Pioneer.

What you should be looking for all depends on what you are wanting the unit to do. If you want it to play mp3 CD's, then grab one with mp3 CD capability. If you want to hook your iPod up, look for iPod compatibility. If you want to hook up your mp3 player, look for a 3.5mm auxiliary in on the front. If you want to hook up a USB drive, then look for one with USB input.

Also check out stuff like buttons, location of buttons/dials/knobs, colours, screens, even some functions like fast forwarding through mp3 files, or how random the random/shuffle function is.

We did post up a special on a Clarion VRX576USB 7" touchscreen which is very close to your budget.

Perhaps it pays to check out the sponsors section from time to time .
