Default install in rear of wagon

    hey

i have finally decided how i want to do the install in the back of my wagon.

i was wondering if the shape of the sub box matters? or is it only the size?.

i have thought about putting them across the back of the seats, but i sleep in the back fairly often and doing this would stop that.

This is what I have, but you can not sleep in the back.....well you could if you lay the back seats down and pull the back box towards the front.

yer it looks nice, but it wouldn't be practical for me.

i was more after info on the sub boxes. does it matter how they are shaped, as long as they have enough volume.

    The box needs to breath.
You could get technical with it.
Some people with recommend that there should be a certain size hole and others will say disagree.
You could search on the net for the hole size in the box.
Lets us know what you find?

shape of the box doesn't matter however volume needs to be exact. If you're working with ported boxes then port length and diameter also comes into it.

not sure which box im goin to go with yet, sealed seems easier, and my manual the sub came with, shows it as the better type for the sub. and that way i dont have to worry about length and diameter, specially since the length is goin to be restricted. going to be fun working out the volume with the wheel arch and everything lol.

yer a sealed box will generally be smaller than a ported box. to calculate the volume (L) = (Height x Width x Depth) / 1000. you decided to make your own box now mate?

if you goinbg sealed a few litres here and there will not matter much.
a wheel arch is just a cylinder cut length ways, V=(Pie*R^2*H)/2

well im thinking about makin it myself. there isnt anyone that i know of around my area that do custom installs. and that guy you gav me the email for in sydney hasnt replied yet, and it would be hard for him to make it for me without looking at it. although making it myself would take a fair while, and i rly cant be bothered doing it.

i might just end up gettin a box made and chucking it in the back

not sure which box would sound better sealed or ported?

depends what the sub is suited to. generally sealed will sound better, especially if your not looking to spend that much on a sub. ported will produce more volume more efficiently.

well the last 3 posts were constructive lol. clyde, i wouldnt really recommend making your own box unless you have a fair bit of experience with woodworking etc, plus it really is a pain in the as$. id go sealed if i were you, expecially in a wagon itll give u a tight low bassline, and wont be as overwhelming as a ported box.

    p.s pie ftw

sweet. the woodworking experiance isnt a problem as my dad's a carpenter, so ill just get him 2 help out. i guess you make them out of MDF, however i wasnt sure what i was going to do with the back part of the box,( sits against the car body), i was thinking maby fibre glass. but ive never used it before and neither has anyone i know. also wasnt sure how id go about joining the fibre glass and the MDF together.

id just go full 18mm mdf, fibreglass is a whole other kettle of fish. glass is mainly used for custom enclosures/door pods etc. mdf is fine for your 'throw in the boot' enclosure

if you havent used 'glass before then i would recommend taking a few of those short tafe courses. i have seen one or 2 on how to work with fibreglass.
or find a bloke who is competent at it and get him to show you.

From reading tutorials on the net it doesn't look THAT hard to use fibreglass. Still want to try it one day when i've got some spare time.

Heres a link that shows a step by step on how to make a sub box out of fibreglass and mdf.
