Default VE SV6 Audio + GPS Questions

    Hi everyone

I have been searching everywhere for a while but have not found he answer i am looking for.

I have in my previous cars changed the headunit to an Alpine CD/MP3 or DVD Unit as all i listen to is burnt Cds. Since the design of the VE dash is not very Audio upgrade friendly, I am interested if it is physically possible to change the cd player in the SV6? to something like an Alpine or another blaupunkt unit.

Failing that I have seen the forums on Ipod Install. Now what i would be doing is looking for a neat setup where wires are not showing. Run it off the car battery but not through the cigi lighter, actually run a wire through behind the dash and to the car battery. Have it sit in a nice pod possibly custom made sitting next to the aux input.

Also i am looking at a GPS unit. I am interested in the TomTom Go 910. purelly for the 20gig harddrive for the MP3 player. If it possible to use this unit as the MP3 player and use the gps when needed. I would have it hardwired to the car

I would be looking to install it like this, but in the ve sv6 of course

Unfortunately no one has really made a replacement cd player for the VE dash. However there are other options. I think its rockford fosgate that make a line converter to use your high level outputs as low level inputs for amplifiers which allows further expansion. ASR on this forum do a similar thing however this involves modification of the head unit itself.

As for the ipod input, sounds like a good idea and can definitely be done, the only downside is using the headphone out on the ipod.. they aren't exactly the best quality when it comes to decent sound reproduction. If it all possible try and find an aux out that uses the dock connector instead.

Regarding the TomTom, the GO910 is an older model that has been discontinued. Never fear as its been replaced by the GO920 and the GO720 in a more basic form. I'm not sure if the 920 is out in Australia yet though, and I'm not sure if it has the HDD on it.

almost most all companies have hi to low devices. (by hi to low we mean, speaker wires to RCA output)
or you can look at getting an amp that will work with hi level inputs, JL audio comes to mind.
also i would not be worried about ipod sound quality if you are running a hi-low converter.

mate are you thinking of spending much on the speakers and amp/s?

also why are you gettting a gps with 20gig if you already have an ipod?

now to answer the first question: yes you can add a headunit but it will either be in the glove box or sitting in a custom moulding under the current HVAC controls.
you can keep the steering wheels controls by using a CAT-09. its made by stinger.
it uses the steering wheels controls and converts them to an infrared beam from a diode. you can place the diode anywhere really. so you will still be able to change tracks and all that if the h/u is in the glove box.

i cant touch type so all that took a while......
andthis is all stopping me playing Crysis...... hehe...... :P

Thanks garfa, I haven't bought the ipod or gps yet. what i was hoping is that i can just use the TomTom unit as both mp3 and GPS instead of installing a GPS and an ipod.

Installing the cd player in the glovebox or under the HVAC controls looks like it might be a good idea. Might look into that. has anyone actually done that yet on their VE?

no idea, but people do it to their BA falcons, because the hvac is combined with the radio as well
