    Default 2 x 10" subs vs 1 x 12" sub

    I'm just wondering how much "louder" 2 10s would be compared to 1 12?

    I have an older 12" 250wrms sub in my car atm and I'm happy with it, but I'm just after that little bit more bass.
    I'm not really interested in 2 12"s ether(I have had them before and it was too much).

    I know about the 10's not putting out as lower frequency ect ect and that there's other things I could try,
    but the main thing I would like to know about is the overall bass output. Thanks.

    well i spose it comes down to what amps/subs your running but yeah i would say a 15 is slower than a 12! anyone confirm?

    Dont mean to butt in, but I thought I'd ask

    Got 2 10" subs in the shed, old Kicker 'competition' subs in a box, apparently were the sh$t way back in 97 when a mate bought them (before killing himself wrapping his VL aroudn a pole) but now look their age. I've also got several amps, all cheapies. 2 of them are 1000 watt max things, all chrome with fans & stuff, one of them Boss brand, the other us audio. Nothing I have, including the wiring kit is the expensive stuff, just what I have collected over the years. That's about the extent of my knowledge- 10 inch, 6x9 and chrome. Oh, I know what splits are too....

    Is any of this worth using? Or should I just stick to 6x9's off one of the amps? I kinda understand how to bridge two subs with 2 channels (done it before successfully). Also I've done a dozen basic stereo installs, the last was the best (mates new JL sub, HU and splits into a Pulsar- sounds noice) so installing isnt an issue.

    What do you reckon?

    To be honest I had an eclipse 7200 500wrms(at 2ohms) sub running of an eclipse amp at 480rms(2ohms) and I fried the sub. It overheated and well the rest is history. I have never done that before and have defiantly learnt from my mistake.

    The point I want to get across is that it's twice as powerful as my older one(which is a "yay" sony explod) yet the explod is almost as loud as the ecplise. I too originally was going to go 2 12's but i thought that if i got one sub instead with a good amount of watts then it would to be fine.

    I have come to realize though that higher wattage is not going to give you more bass and there for volume(it will give you maybe 3%? but no where near twice as much). Your best off with more cone area to get volume.

    trade: spl or loudness all comes down to displacement caused by the cone over its stroke. a 10 might have a longer throw than a certain 12 and may cause more air to be displaced, but generally if you compare 2 woofers from one manufacturer's series the 12 will be louder.

    [[[please notice that Power handling has not been mentioned. to gain 3 db (barely audible) you need to double the power.]]]

    box design comes in to it as well.
    a 15 can be fine with quick response depending of the woofer and what box its in.
    i would probably be more looking at 12 inch woofers in a custom designed box for trance.
    work with your local car audio shop to design a sub to suit your tastes.

    Sub "speed" is a measure of its inductance and also enclosure dependant. a 15 is not necessarily slower then a 10

    fair enough on all the responses, but what about my original question? How much louder is 2 10's compaired to 1 12?

    in answer to your first question if you entering i comps the way they handi cap is:
    2x10's = 1 x 12
    2x12's = 1x15

    and so on but at the end of the day it will come down to a few factors
    amp
    power cable
    quality of rca's
    box size
    ported or sealed
    direction facing in the car
    sound deadening in the vehicle
    amp power
    as well as the power of the amp to centre the subs ready for the next beat

    personally i would go with a good single 12 on a good amp over 2x10's any day because you still have boot space.

    i have had 10's and 12's they both sound awsome if set up properly

    you didn't seem to understand my point.
