I've recently bought myself some sony 6x9's and 6"s to put in my VS commodore. I have a couple of questions.
1) How much would it roughly cost for a place like Strathfield or JB to install both sets of speakers (considering they would have to cut 6x9's into rear parcel shelf)
2) Ive heard instaling the door speakers is very easy, wuld it be worth just doing the 6"s myself, if so does anyone have any guides etc because i know you have to take apart the door etc.
Cheers
1. I have had no experience with Strathfield or JB but I know that my local installer (I live in the country so it is probably cheaper at JB or Strathfield) charges $60 to install a new head unit and new speakers.
2. There is a very good How To on here that goes through how to remove the door panels: http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/...rim-vn-vs.html
Strathfield charge a fortune in Sydney...they wanted $110 to install 6x9's... which is a rip seen as it is a matter of cutting two holes in the parcel tray and running speaker cable to the head unit.
if you can do the doors you could easily do the 6x9's as well..there are heaps of how to's on this site.
Ans doesn't a vs come with the 6x9's already in the parcel tray? I know the vr that i have came with 6x9's moulds in the tray already.
get spacers for the 6x9s. you can get a defect from cutting any part of the body and pretty much only way to prove i that the speaker mounts are not structural is to get an engineers certificate. if the cop is in doubt you will get a sticker.
second as said before, there is a good write up with pics in the DIY section.
as for how easy it is to install the front door speakers it depends on the speaker.
i wouldnt really trust jb i mean if you cant do it yourself after reading everything on here i guess but keep a close eye on them they tend to charge you for things you dont even need.
Just an update.
Got them done at Strathfield.
$40 for the front doors 6" install
$100 to cut and install the 6x9's in rear parcel shelf.
Took them an hour and a half, did a very neat job, no problems.
I would recommend if you are too lazy ot not very good with your hands.
you do now realize that if you want to get a roadworthy that you have to get the parcel shelf fixed and an engineering certificate to prove its been done properly. cutting is illegal as it alters the structural design of the car for safety reasons.
I cant believe (so called) installers do it!
mate, for a few hundred i would cut up someone elses car.......
I wouldn't cut it up without telling them that they will be altering the structural design of the car and will now have trouble getting a roadworthy certificate, but if they still wanted it done after being told that then I would do it. Thats just me though.
anything hey, il keep that in mind(no sexual favors intended)
i didnt mean cut into the chassis.....i meant as in cut up the parcel shelf...i got a vl, and it has a particleboard shelf that sits on the actual chassis....in the vl it was a matter of cutting holes in the particle board as there are already holes in the chassis for 6" speakers in the rear....
so i took out the parcel shelf, cut two holes on either side, screwed the speakers and spacers to the board, recovered the lot in vinyl to match the original and wired it up....never once had any problems with cops with it..
as for the new 2 x 12" subs...that may be a different scenario....think they produce too much noise pollution...lol
so with the 6x9's are they just screwed into the masonite (?) parcel shelf, not actually into the metal ribbing underneath? this is doable as the magnet/basket of the 6x9 just sticks through the stock standard 6in cut out in the frame. what i did with 6.5in splits i installed in the shelf the other day - just got an mdf spacer screwed to the underside of the parcel shelf cover and sat the woofer on top of the cover in the stock cut outs, and screwed through into the mdf spacer underneath. turned out to be the best alternative as the 6.5's wouldnt go into the factory mount.
well with mine i recut a parcel shelf out of mdf, and cut out some spacers as well, so that the speakers were sitting a bit higher (didnt hit the custom sub box in the boot). I rewrapped everything in vinyl, as the interior of vl is vinyl. Then i wired everything up and looks sweet as. The custom boot is looking good so far too....bit more of a challenge then parcel shelf. I also did a custom job on the front door to fit in the 6" speakers, as there is no room in the door to fit them.
