    Question BOSS Amp.?

hey i picked up a boss amp today. off a mate it says 1000 watt 4channel so i thought ok lets test it out. i hooked it all up and the fan spun. the light turned on. but there was no audio coming out of any channels.

just a q? what sort of fuses should they be? its got two 40's in it now.

    thanks for all your help

you cracked you back window with a 4 channel kooked up to a sub...?
the fuses that came with the amp are the right ones.
if the fuses are too low a rating then they will just blow, right? so changing them will have zero effect, and if they are blowing on a new amp then wither its installed wrong or more likely its a stuffed amp.

Have had a boss amp for 7 years and it has never missed a beat (well okay it did once on a long trip on a 40 degree day - went into protection mode).

From memory it only had 20amp fuses in it, but i may be mistaken. Many people say they are crap but funnily enough i've never actually come across anyone with half a brain who has wrecked one. Anyone can flog the guts out of any brand amp and cause distortion or burn it out.

my god i really cant believe some of the stuff being said here.
you get what you pay for. boss stuff is cheap, so the quality will not be amazing or the power outputs huge or the reliability as long as another amp worth more, but for $200 or what ever who cares.....
if i had a choice between a boss amp or no amp i know EXACTLY what would sound better and which one i would choose.
clean it up, some of the stuff said is just plain inflamitory.

as i said it's bloody loud and heap's of bass but the quality is shocking
but what do i expect for $60 from ebay it's my first system ive done and why spend heap's when it's trial and error it's better to blow cheap crap up then top of the line expensive gear (hasnt blown up yet dont think the sub's are far off tho)

Your system is only as good as the installer.

Example, Cheapo house speakers (each box 2 10in subs with tweeters) wired straight into the back of the deck. Had better quality than most cars i've seen as sound offs

Give me a good 200w amp, 2x10" subs some MDF and I'll show bass that punches harder than Danny Green. Its all in the design guys. And most of the power outputs claimed for AMPS and speakers is just plain crap.

Saying that Boss is good gear is like winning a race in the special olympics. Do you want me to continue this?

As for a 4 channel boss sub breaking windows with a pair of subs. no, just no.

for what it cost, compared with the work it has done, to me it has been good gear. Continue from a professional installer who could get hold of very good gear at good prices point of view if you like but you are one in about 15000 in your position on here.

People winning the special Olympics have more to be proud of that those who don't.

Give me a 6x9 and 90wrms amp and some MDF and I'll blow your mind. What 99% of the population believe to be punchy bass is the upper octavse of low note being louder the main octave.

    E.G.

60hz playing at 120db will also have it's 2nd order octave playing at 120hz Now, if that 120hz is 123db then it's going to be just a little louder then 60hz tone. But, since the 60hz tone is going to be the predominant tone heard then it mimics "punchy" bass because of the way your ears cannot differentiate the difference between 60hz as a predominant tone and 120hz being the secondary and then vice versa.

Now, if the 60hz tone was the predominant tone and 120hz was still the secondary BUT the 60hz tone was being played at 123db and the 120hz tone played at 120db then that is what your ears will percieve to be as deep bass when in reality the tone is no different. It's just how you can system can reproduce. Actual power doesn't really mean a great deal.

    Some strange but true facts.....
3db is only just noticeably louder.
    10db is twice as loud.

example: 123db is just noticeably louder then 120 but 130db is TWICE as loud as 120db.

Now, for the hard to believe **** and you can call me a liar all you like

To increase your sound from 120db upto 123db you need to double your power. So, if you have 200wrms making 120db then to reach 123db you need 400wrms but to reach 130db your system will then need 4000wrms. Mind boggling eh?

Your missing the point Jon. The Boss amp and Sony sub have done well for you correct? I agree wholeheartedly it's only once crapped out on you and that was simply overheating...MANY amps downfalls are this. Hell, I had an amp that was prone to heat also. Moment if got about 30C it shutdown until I jumped out and sprayed it down with freezespray. But would you park your car next to someone running something like Alpine/Eclipse/Kenwood and then say yours sounds as good as theirs? Probably not Jon. That there lies my point. I don't think I've ever actually said BOSS is crap (ok ;P maybe once or twice) but in reality it's built for a purpose and it does it fine. But anyone who compares BOSS audio to the likes of other mainstream equipment are crazy. Put it beside Rampage Audio gear from Super cheap Auto and you will notice something....it's the same stuff
