just as Im about to run out and buy speakers within the next 10 minutes!!!
haha thanks, good timing ans a good, no BS writeup !!!
There hae been alot of threads lately asking what speakers should i buy? So here is a thread for all of them
When you ask "wich speakers should i buy" you will never get a definitive answer. All people hear differently and speakers that sound great to one person may not to you.
The best way to pick a set of speakers is to head out to your nearest speialist car audio dealer, and audition the speakers on display. Dont ay so much atention to how they look or who they are made by (I will address this later) just listen to the music and compare the sets you test. It will soon be clear how different one set of speakers can sound entirely different to another set.
Speaker size is another problem for people, In my oppinion 6" splits are the standard for a set of speakers. These fit into comodore factory locations (Vr-vz i am sure) with little or no modification. The rears are not so important as they are there mainly for rear fill or for passengers to have some beats. Try and stear clear of 6x9's unless you are not planning on running a sub as they do produce lower frequencies than 6" but they lack in SQ. A set of 6' coaxials are a good choice if running sub/s.
Speakers ALWAYS sound better powered of an amp than off a head unit, a head unit is lucky to produce 17wrms where lower end 4 channel amps put out around 45 per channel, also amps give you total control of Freq and gives you the option of Hp and Lp filters. Just ask the guys at the shop they will help you with selection of an amp if need be.
Speaker instalation is EASY people!, do not fork out Hundreds of dollars on instalation, have a go yourselves. If you get stuck there are plenty of people on here to give you some tips.
Brand choice is not so important as long as you are buying quality gear,
Cheers
Garrett

Good work mate, definitely agree about installs. I must have spent hundreds maybe even close to a 1k with all the different things I added and changed.
Speakers and a head unit are not a drama to install, but if you are gonna setup amps and all the rest then a professional is the best way to go. The chances of a fire increase quite dramatically. I know I always keep a fire extinguisher for electricals just in case.
Good work!

its about time someone did a write up like this, every week i see a new post with the headline "what speakers should i get?", well done mate for takin the time out to do this!
simplest answer, because Im a no hoper when it comes to this crap.
Had the VZ head unit modified by ASR (Greg aka Phreddy) to allow RCA out
Used a Sony Xplod 600W 4 channel amp I brought from Supercheap last year
Used a 1300 watt Sony Xplod sub from SCA
Used a rampage install kit
Used new Kevlar Jaycar Response 6.5" speakers front and rear
Cost me $200 for all 4 speakers, cant remember with the amp and sub but it was fairly cheap as Im on a budget.
Not the best sounding system but its come aloooooong way from where it was this time 12 hours ago. Took 3 of us 5 hours to do the complete job, that included re wiring the speakers to the amp, but it was worth it.
For $100 a pair cant go wrong. They sound awesome when connected to response amps too, thanks to Greg from ASR for a demo in his SV6!!!
please dont use liquidity's list of car audio brand names as your basis for buying your gear, it was completely based on personal opinions without any info backing up why brand A is better than brand B etc. Sure use it as a guide to begin with but be sure to do some further research and go test everything out before you go out and blow all your savings! I notice the list has been slightly modified again since it was posted on MEA.
Yes it has bee slightly modified to include some exotics into the "Good brand" section. If you read the bottom of the post it states CLEARLY
There are obviously hundreds of car audio brands out there, this is just a guide to help you guys as much as possible. also Sourced form MEA
This is just a guide to help you guys out.
RUN41T: Real cars don't power the front wheels... they lift them
**** you BEZZ! got to it first.
run4it: schneider is made by boss. its a crap product for christs sake.
in fact i completely disagree with this whole thread.
if your after a speaker, then you have a budget and you listen, brand means nothing.
also a bit of the old "get what you pay for" comes into it as well.
to tellt he truth i have an american boss amp running 80 rms per channals oh and its a 4 channal amp. i handles fine it goes well andnever had any problems with it. its rolled around in my boot my 15 inch sub has fell on it its taken a beating and its still fine!! so im not sure if is all american boss amps that ur classing as **** but the one i have is fine can hear me from blocks away. also running some mtx speakers in the rear and working on mtx splits and a new amp
VT S PACK
just because it works does not mean its good quality.
conversley just because its bad quality does not mean it wil break.
didnt mean that i ment that it goes hard and has worked non stop for 6 months
VT S PACK
wat garfa is trying 2 say is that they have such a bad name 4 themselves 4 the poor build quailty. this doesnt mean ur unit isnt the same as every single fauty unit out there but i 2 have boss gear being used else where atm thats lasted years but doesnt mean its not crap gear.

Come on garfa, did tou even read the post i clearly stated that:

The list is a GUIDE nothing else. I wrote this only to help people out. I have stated that brand is not important and to listen to the speakers, so i dont understand what you are critisising???
RUN41T: Real cars don't power the front wheels... they lift them
but you copied a list of brands listing which is better. sorta defeats the purpose......
i nol boss is absolute crap ammerican boss seams to be better tho, got my new pioneer sub in a week ago goes hard as
VT S PACK
lol @ Recommending NOT buying American BOSS
I can honestly say that my Jaycar Response Precision kevlar 6.5" components are one of the nicest speakers I've ever heard, next to the old Alpine DDDrive splits. And for $149 rrp you can't go wrong. They MUST be amped though. HUs don't pump the juice out enough.
Life's Grouse in Frankston South!
6 months later and i still disagree with saying a speaker is **** because of brand......
Why is this sticky???????.........
lol you love it
i did some research and the other night went and bought a pair of 6.5 fusion cm65 splits. i am running them off a 70x2 rms kenwood amp and they are absolutely awesum speakers. they go as loud as i want and are excellent quality.
mum has an xr6 turbo,i just did the nicest mod,a sticker on the back windsheild saying "when i grow up i want to be a commodore"

Good Post!!!!!!!
May I add, "Let your ears do the buying!"
The old saying, "You get what you pay for" doesn't always apply! With a bit of research and smart buying, you can get good gear, at a good price!
With brand names, research to find out what country the item is being made in. Because with some companies, a brand name is only that! For example, see if your next purchase is produced in China under different brand names, by clicking on the links below.

Rear Speakers: FusionPP-FR6520 Subwoofer: Fusion PP-SW120 Amp For Front And Rear: Fusion PP-AM120040 Subwoofer Amp: Fusion PP-AM300010
I just finished installing my new sound system and I totally agree about listening to the speakers not the salesman. neither should you believe the hype that this brand is better than that one and so forth, in my last car I had to install a mix of stereo brands to get the quality I wanted as I found mtx amps and subs performed great but I was disappointed with their speakers so I turned to pioneer which I reckon is the other way around good speakers crap amps and subs lol. But now in my new ride I’ve gone all alpine type r and holy S**t they are worth the money. Oh and dyna mat works wonders
I'd have to agree whole-heartedly with Vg-ute-mad.
Your ears dictate what you want from your speakers, regardless of brand.
For example: I hate sony (it's one of those four-letter words..), but some people swear by them (rather than at them, like me), as they sound great to them.
Good on them! If that's what they like to hear best, far be it from me to criticise them about it being sony.
Any yum-cha brand out there will have many dedicated followers, regardless of the hordes of people that tell the populous to steer clear of them.
As long as it sounds good to you & you can afford to get it, then get it!
BTW, RUN41T, you may wish to spell-check that write-up a little![]()
On the note of auditioning speakers, perhaps it should be said that it is always best to audition speakers in a car rather than demo board if you have the option. A demo board gives no indication of how a speaker will sound once in a car.
However, also bear in mind that a speaker in a car may be installed differently to how it will be installed in your car. the source, amps, even processing are most likely going to be different too. It is merely a better indicator of how they will sound once installed and are not the perfect way. The only perfect way would be for an installer to fit each speaker in your car and for you to listen in your own car. And yes I have actually been offered this by a store.
Finally, dont get me wrong demo boards defeinately have their uses and are particularly useful for comparing speakers as they are in most cases wired to the same HU, and same amp. and unfortunately in 99% of the time they are our only option.
