Hey guys, Im sure these have been answered before but I cant find where
1) Does anyone have noise after installing an AMP in a VZ? Im thinking perhaps the electronic throttle is interfearing with the RCA cables (power is down the passenger side, RCA drivers side and it runs near the throttle assy). Perhaps being ex police the car is running a bigger alternator which might also be causing the issue. Could also just be a crap cheap amp (Sony Xplod) thats causing it.
Any thoughts on where to start troubleshooting??
2) I know fitting 6.5" speakers to the 6" pods dont work without modification BUT surely someones found a decent work around? I chopped the f*ck out of the pods and now the speakers still dont sit flush and at higher volume I can hear them shake on the plastic pod a bit. I would like to professional it up a bit, well at least fit them to pods that work.
Speakers are Jaycar Response 6.5"
Any help on either 2 would be appreciated ...
I would start troubleshooting by checking all of your grounds, I had this problem in my Vx and it turned out to be the earth on the deck. I used the factory earth (In the Loom) but this wassnt sufficient, so i earthed it straight to the trans tunnel. Failing this id run the Rca's up the cenre of the car as there are power cables that run down both sides of the commo's.
Have you done any work with fibreglass? Maybe Make some custom fibrglass pods, take a mould off the originalls and modify to suitJust an idea
Cheers

RUN41T: Real cars don't power the front wheels... they lift them
Id start by simply disconnecting the rcas from the amp and see if the noise remains. Does the noise increase with increasing the vol control, is it on both the radio and the CD/ipod whatever?
this will tell you whether the amp is picking the noise up from the signal inputs or the power supply......or both(if the noise increases when you plug in the rcas.
If there is no noise there, then id plug the rcas in at the amp end but leave unplugged from the front end......if no noise there....plug into the front end.
Quite often it can be that your front end is picking up the noise and amplifying it well through the preouts and may have never been audible through the normal speaker outs.
yeah mate pretty much either fiberglass or mdf rings gluded together to suit.
depends if you are committed to do that tho.
it would appear my noise was none other then an empty grommet hole. Being ex-police its has cable run through there before and was silliconed up. I didnt realise when we did the install the guys cleaned out the sillicone and left a hole about the size of a 20 cent piece with a cable about the size of a pencil runing through it, I was copping engine noise through it.
Ive since sealed it up using some proper sealer from work, I'll let it set tonight and find out tomorrow if thats the problem. Failing that then I'll start to troubleshoot the amp and install, thanks guys
As for the pods Im not that committed lol![]()
Im surprised no ones come up with an easier solution in the past. I cant even find anything on ebay ...
mate it will be easy if you pay someone else to do it, will cost a few hundred though.
thanks guys,
worked out the noise wasnt through the audio system, it was in fact vacuum caused by the grommet which them amplified the engine!
As for the pods Im gonna find a decent work around, will let you all know when I do ...
This may sound stupid, but I've used some foam tape stuff (foam weatherstripping maybe?) in my car to stop rattles... Just take out the speaker and apply the foam tape all around, it compresses nicely and should stop all the rattles you are getting...
And about the jaycars, how good would you say they are quality wise? I've been thinking about buying some VR/VS pods to put in my vn and while I'm at it get some better, but affordable speakers (I'm running speakers screwed into the door trim itself - horrible idea!)
