I have a VS 96 Commodore currently it has a 4x45w Kenwood Deck 2 x 6" Speakers, 6x9" Speakers and 1 x Amp (not sure on the watts).
However I am looking to replace the head unit to one with and Ipod interface, Now I have no idea about stereos. Im assuming the Ipod connects via a 3.5mm jack? but not sure how you change the songs.
Im after a head unit that has the best functionality, Something that changes songs easily and is able to use all the Ipod functions including play lists.
If anyone has any experience or has an Ipod allowed head unit, Please recommend me one.
Thanks Dale
Im looking at some decks here

Im hanging out until the clarion dxz386usb is available.
see:http://download.clarion.com/asia/en/...08_1DIN_en.pdf
Ive seen one on demo, and it appears great, full ipod control + usb(and it is fast on usb and gives all the track names etc.....many dont)
The best part.....$299......if clarion australia ever get their act together!
To get control over your ipod you will need a headunit with a specific ipod connector into the large connector into the bottom of the ipod. Pioneer were big on these and it looks like the sony are too. If you feed your music into the 3.5mm connector you will have music only, no control over the ipod though as its only an audio input.
Heads up if you have an ITOUCH
Went into strathfield today and apparently none of the current head units in Auz at the moment will control an IPOD TOUCH (assume phone as well). This tends to support my net research.
They can control prev models (mini, nano, classic) but not the Itouch
Your only choice (at the moment) seems to be to get an aux connector to go to the iTouch's headphone output. I have a newish Kenwood amp and the ip300 cable doesn't do it. I have heard rumour of an ip500 cable in the states, but the strathfield(not always too knowledgable) reckon it won't matter as the head units don't have the software to understand how to talk to these newer ipods.
I hope I can upgrade soon as the Itouch is fantastic to navigate/select songs while driving being a touch screen.

so far the best head unit with ipod connectivity is alpine. followed by pioneer. so if its the best functionality id go with something like the alpine cda-9887. and guys if you really want help in car audio dont go to strathfield. most times theyre staff are not knowledgable at all. so if its advice your after. go to a specialised car audio store.\\
and what is the amp running mate is it powering the front or rear speakers or both??
Update:
I just hooked up the Ipod cable I got from HongKong on Ebay. Works great after all. It uses the Aux input and also charges my Ipod Touch on the road. The engine whine interference I had from the old fm sender is gone. I can't control my Ipod from the head unit. Apparently lower gen than Ipod touch can be controlled from the head unit. (This is what I have heard, double check that if you intend to purchase)
Cheers -Davo-
If you want the best functionality with your ipod i would go a alpine IDX-001 followed by the 002 and 003

This is the ultimate in holden stereo customisation.
Take a look at this website for more details
udc.aus - Holden iPod interface
This guy in Melbourne has developed a DIY interface kit that goes into your existing Series 1 or series 2 single or 6 stacker factory stereo from the entire Commodore range from VY to VZ.
They have these items for sale on eBay and they are very simple to install.
The factory unit keeps the cars features looking nice and standard, and besides these units are fantastic. With this interface and an amp connected in a hi-low configiration to your speaker wires.
Thread is over a year old.
