    Default alpine type S subwoofer

hey guys just looking for some advice, im thinking of getting a sub and amp fitted into my VY stock system. Went to autobarn and JB today to get some opinions. The guys at JB suggested a really good priced alpine sub and amp package plus an external bass controller. However the sub was a Type S, i haven't heard anything good about type S products, are they really that bad?

Well mate, Alpine makes good quality products, but there type s range is on the low side.

Give us the model numbers and prices they quoted you. What size Sub was it?

I might be able to make something up for you if you give me your budget.

    Thanks

they quoted me the sws-1243D 12" Type S sub with a mrp-M450 mono amp for $400 (not includ install and cables). If i was to go ahead my budget would be about $600-$700 (fully installed), all i want is to add a sub to the stock stereo (and have an external bass controller). I don't know a lot about car audio so im just going on other people opinions atm.
    cheers

My mate had one Type S sub in his VS calais 5 litre. Sounded pretty lame. So he put a second Type S in there. Sounded pretty good.

So my answer is, make sure you get a 4 channel and 2 of the alpine Type S's.

Alternatively, spend a tad extra and get a Type R. They sound great.

digital designs 1512 rrp of $350
and a response (jaycar) 2 X 150WRMS amp bridged to give you 500WRMS. rrp $250

Most of the time JB HI FI will cut you a good deal on amp and sub packages. I go to the one my cousin manages down here in vic, got a monoblock and a JL W3 V3 for $560 with staff discount. So a standard discount would be almost as good because staff discounts aren't that big.

But, don't buy one of those pre made boxes. Build your own. It's very easy, and you will get better sound depending on whether you go for a ported enclosure or a sealed enclosure. I went ported and made my own box. I get some insane bass from a single 12" sub.

Depending on what autobarn store you go to, they might not no anything, but trust me they will rock your world. Digital designs also have prefab boxes, purchase one of those if your not confident in building your own. they are perfect.

    Thanks

remember people, he's only using the stock system in his car, he doesn't need a DD sub. To be honest, just go with an alpine Type R sub. Type S are really borderline and not that great.

Sure could. I'm pretty sure Type R subs are around the 400watt rms mark..........Something like that.

If you decide on getting the MRP-M450 and a type R sub, make sure the sub you get is a dual 4-ohm voice coil so you can wire up to a 2-ohm load and feed the sub 400 watts RMS, even though the type R is 500 watts RMS.

Thanks for your help Roon, but the type Rs are more expensive than the DD, consider that. The DD 1512 will eat a type r 12. There is just no comparison.

You must really hear a dd sub to really appreciate just what they are like. And if you guys are recommending him a type r, he really needs to have a really good think about what you guys are getting him into for the same price.

For a cheaper price you cant go wrong with the DD 1512. And if you want to go with a MRP-M450, that will power the DD perfectly.

No burn out coils if you set the gains wrong! seeing you would be under powering a type R with the M450.

Talk to your local dealer about gear, and wiring, they will help you out.

    Cheers

thanks guys, iv decided to go back to jb tomorrow and ask if i can listen to the type S and also head to autobarn to enquire about DD subs. im pretty turned off by type S's now lol, also called JB before and they said they could do a type r sub(swr-1222D) and amp (mrp-M650) package for around 600 with no cables, installations and box, a little too expensive for me unfortunately Thanks for all your opinions

From your earlier post, you stated that the DD 1512 sub has a retail price of $350. The type R sub at JB have them at $289. I totally agree that the 1512 will eat the type R alive but you have to consider he is only using stock speakers.

I don't necessarily think that the sub will have burnt out coils just because it's 100 watts RMS under?

if he tunes it wrongly it will burn out the voice coils, On foums you generaly talk RRp, as sale prices, and mates rates, are not ment to be disclosed.

Both the 1512 rrp $350 and the type R ppr $350

So considering, a dd would be a better deal, and easier to run, as its 450WRMS.

Not meaning to criticize you Roon VR

Ah sorry there, my mistake haha. Well then, I guess it'd be better to get a Digital designs 1512 then.

hey guys just thought id let you know that i went back to JB today after heading to two autobarns and the local car audio specialist.
