Default Installing 6x9s in Parcel Self - VL

    howdy all,

I'm wanting to install a pair of 6x9s into the rear parcel shelf of my VL, however I know that they won't fit.

What are my options to have these installed? In my previous VL I cut the body to enable them to be mounted to the standard parcel shelf, however I'm not keen on going down this path again....

    Cheers.

Mate what do you think about making a new parcel shelf out of MDF? Maybe like a 13 or 20ml thick one?

Hey any tips on making a custom parcel shelf... I have the current one out of the VL. Is it as simple as tracing the current shape onto what 12 / 20mm MDF and cutting it out?

I ask because I see that the standard parcel shelf fits in under the rear windscreen rubber seal, as well as slidding in under the rear seat etc...

Yeah I just traced around it, I kinda cheated in the VKC, I had another MDF shelf to trace around rather than the flimsy factory piece. & I found no problems getting the shelves to fit under the seats.

I've rang a few places and can't seem to get MDF in the total length of the parcel shelf.. any idea's on this guys? Parcel shelf is a little under 1400mm and can only seem to find a 1200mm length.....

    you can get a 1200mm X 2400mm sheet of 16mm MDF for around $26...

however, I would not go that thick, 8 - 12mm, and attach spacers (made out of thicker MDF) to the shelf if you need...

I've used 6mm in the past, and just had a join down the middle, with a block of 16mm underneath, screwed together from the top... if you carpet it, you'll never know.

Thanks for ya help on this guys. When it comes to doing the carpet what form of adhesive do you use to glue the carpet down onto the MDF?

    Cheers.

Bunnings has cheap MDF, get em to rough it down to size for ya on their panel saw while ya there, you'll just have to jigsaw the shape at home.
mines 20mm MDF, I put a 45' bevel in the front edge so that it would sit under the seats, you'll also have to bevel the rear edge so that it fits under the window but doesnt exert upward or rearward pressure on the window seal, if you're clever you can line the holes up and use the baby seat anchorage points to fasten it down with countersunk bolts.. use what they call carpet velour your cars trim colour (auto upholsters can help here).

I made risers up out of the MDF off cut to gain speaker clearance over the factory holes and trimmed these up in the carpet velour offcuts, screwed it all together, the sound is solid as the speakers do not move at all.

attach the trim by pulling it tight over the board and use a staplegun in from the underside to secure the trim. I don tuse goooey sprya adhesive, it doesnt stand up to the heat a reaer parcel shelf is subjected to.

you'll get a mint finish that looks factory.
    good luck.
