I'm looking at buying the Pioneer DEH-P6050UB for my 1998 VT, go into my VT S Pack when I buy it...
currently I've only got the stock unit in there, (it was my Dad's car but he never needed or wanted to get a better head unit, i want one to play all discs and be iPod compatible) but I've heard that not all units are compatible with Commodores and that Commodores are notorious for the difficulty with changing audio systems (thats what I've heard, never tried doing an audio system myself)
is the Pioneer DEH-P6050UB compatible, is it a good unit?

For about $10 you can buy a wiring loom adapter than makes the connection job very easy - you can pretty much join the head unit's wires to the adapters wires of the same colour, it's a simple plug and play process. You don't have to cut your car's wiring loom at all, and the wiring will already be done when you want to switch the Pioneer into your S pack. Best of all, the old head unit will plug straight back in and the car is back in factory condition.
From memory, VTs have a double DIN stereo and the Pioneer is a single DIN size, so you will also need a fascia kit to plug the hole in your dash and mount your new unit. Pick one up from Autobarn while you're buying the wiring adapter - they're about $30-40.
The head unit looks good - just pick one with the features and appearance that you like, compatibility with particular cars is usually not a problem.
I am starting to sound like a broken record but if your car has an electric aerial and you want it to work properly don't buy a pioneer. Just done it and they don't have a dedicated aerial switch wire, just a amp switch wire which can be used and it won't give factory functionality of your electric aerial. It will go up and down but if the head unit is on it is up regardless of whether you are listening to a CD or the radio. Unlike the factory unit which only puts it up when you turn on the radio.

Who cares... It's only an antenna and a stupid reason to rule out a perfectly good range of head units.
How did the install go mate? Im looking at that very headunit to go in my VX, I have no concerns with wiring it up, my only worry is the depth of the unit. Did it fit all the way in?
Ive seen a write up where some bloke had to cut the back end out of the metal shroud of the double din area to make a unit fit with rcas and antenna, this unit has a whole extending bit poking out the end of it...
