yep sounds broken, get a new head-unit instead of a head unit you got from a mate.
    My car audio:

CD tuner: Alpine CDA-9884E with Ipod interface
    Front speakers: Alpine Type R SPR-17S 6.5 component speakers, powered by a avant-garde 23dxi 2 channel amplifier - 2x51 watt RMS
Rear speakers: pioneer coaxials connected to tuner
Subwoofer: Alpine Type R SWR-1222D 12" 2 ohm dual voice coil 500 watts RMS powered by a response precision 2x150 watts RMS 2 channel amp bridged to 500 watts RMS @ 4 ohms

Popping usually means damaged amp IC, which can happen when installing if something touches something it shouldn't.

You could take it out and power it up and check each set of speaker outputs at a time to see if it still occurs, otherwise get it checked by a pro(the company who made the head unit).

nothing was changed from the amp
it was simply a deck swap
nothing on the amp was touched
and all my amps were working that day and still are working

possibly static electricity has killed it, static and amps dont mix.
