Iv put in a 12" sub and iv hooked up 3 different amps, nothing special but i cant seem to get a decent sound at all out of it.
Last time i put a system into my old VP it was a cheap 12" and a tiny amp and it sounded beaut for what i wanted.
The only differences i can say exist are that the current sub is in a much larger box, the boot of my new car is heavily sound deadened and i am now using a 4 channel amp rather than a mono as the mono i have didnt quite cut it.
The bass sounds really good for very very low frequecies but it doesnt play slightly lower frequecies at all and when it does they are very sharp and stiff sounding. iv tuned the amps b4 but i dont know alot about them, i normally just fiddle until it sounds good. it does sound like its a matter of adjusting the pass filters but iv tried and didnt help. could it be the box being too big or maybe is it the sound deadening stopping me from hearing the lower frequiecy bass. If not any tips on what exactly to adjust to get the higher frequecy bass or how to get the bass to sound a bit deeper and not so stiff and sudden. Thanks
You can mono your 4 ch amp, just bridge it across the 2 front or 2 rear channles. Having not taken much notice of vt boots, it may be a case of you boot being very sound deadend and killing the bass. It could also be a case of just needing a better box too, which i would be inclined o tincker with. Try making you box smaller or bigger, or try porting it. Also try making it out of different thickness materials aswell. See how you go.
Check for leaks in the box too - yes, even a ported box (at the resonant frequency of the box there's a surprising amount of pressure / rarefaction in a ported box).
A leak allowing compressed air at the rear of the cone to find its way to the front - or vice versa - will kill your bass every time. The sound is being cancelled out before it gets a chance to propagate.
Easiest way to check for a leak?? Grab a short length of somall diameter tubing (aquarium air line is perfect), stick one end in your ear, and with some solid bass playing through the sub, run the free end of the tubing around the speaker frame and all the box joins. You'll soon hear if there's an air leak.

what brand amp are you running now? Being a 4channel amp, you might not be running enough power to the sub.
Also is the box made specifically for the sub or is it a generic box. Spend a weekend building a box built for the sub and it'll sound **** loads better
yeh iv bridged the amp already and it is maybe low powered, its 800W i think, but i was thinking more the box but i still have my old box that my old sub used to sound good in so might try it, i just liked the box now cos it was fitted perfectly to fit on the side of the boot
Build yourself 2 or 3 different custom boxes if you want. I used to enjoy a weekend pilfering builing site bins for supplies and making different size sub boxs on the cheap.
on the cheap...i like that, might have to find me some building site bins
Or ask your nearst bunnings or hardware store for their old cover sheets. They usually sell them for nix and you get a decent size sheet of timber. Built my kitchen benchtop out of them, cost me $10.
The box you are using may be to small for the woofer of the box could be to thin, You usually get a very shallow and hollow sound from a woofer if the box is to small.
