Hey guys, I own a '90 VN Commodore S and looking to install recently purchased speakers into it.
I have a pair of 6x9 and a pair of 6.5" speakers which I want to install, currently the car still has the stock speakers in the front and rear.
I took my car to Autobarn to get the job done properly, but the blokes there claim that I need to purchase a flat parcel shelf to mount the 6x9s properly.
Is this the only way I can get the speakers into my car, or are there other ways to get the job done? And whats the best way to mount the 6.5" speakers into the front?
Any opinions would be greatly appreiciated.
Cheers
Ii made up some risers for the 6x9s in the back and used the standard parcel shelf in my old vn. In the front I fitted vr speaker pods to the doors, should be able to get them really cheap from the wreckers nowadays. Really easy to fit too.
I was gonna buy some risers, but the bloke at Autobarn says that they make the speaker sounds like crap, not producing any bass or something along those lines.
I have the VR speaker pods in the front doors also.
When I had 6x9's I used small spacers I made out of some MDF (about 1cm high).
if they arent sealed properly the risers will make the speakers sound like crap. Probably right with a dodgy autobarn install
Righteo, I've found some VR speaker pods from a mate, so the front speakers are covered.
But whats the best way to seal risers for the 6x9s? I want to avoid having to buy another parcel shelf just to install some cheap speakers.
Sorry if these are stupid questions but I have never installed a stereo before.
just make sure you have no airgaps between speaker-riser-parcel shelf. You will most probably need to cut the parcel shelf a bit to fit the basket in even though you have the risers.
Excellent, thanks bezz, i'll give it a go
cant you just cut a hole in the back tray ??im haveing the same problem but im just gonna cut the hole and put the 6x9s in
I'm not entirely sure Mr Big Westy, but to get the 6x9 in you may have to cut into the metal frame beneath the parcel shelf, which is illegal and makes the car unroadworthy.
If your parcel shelf is completely flat then you should be fine, but mine is stock and has curves which makes it hard to just "drop it in there".
