I bought a new aerial mast to replace my one which makes a clunking noise when it gets to either the top or bottom, but when I put the new mast in the white rope part pulls it'self down like it should, but when I turn the radio back on again the aerial comes all the way out again, including the white rope part.
Anyone got any ideas on where I'm going wrong?
Just realised the aerial i bought was for a VY series 2 but mine is a Series 1. I wouldn't have thought there was a difference in aerials but maybe there is.
where did you buy the replacement, i desperately need one
Hi Bennoc
I have experienced this problem in the past. The mast is ok, it suits a whole range of different Holden models. The problem is within the switching within the aerial gearbox. There is a plastic gear which is driven by the aerial motor. This gear has electical contacts moulded into it which enable the aerial power up and down functions. At one point, there is a gap in the contact which breaks the circuit when the aerial has reached a certain point. The aerial mast has to be installed with that gear at a certain point when you first feed the drive shaft (that's the white geared strip at the bottom of the mast). If you don't have it in the right position, the motor simpy keeps going and pushes the whole mast back out the top. It works fine when retracting the aerial because once it's retracted, it can't move any further and the motor stops. I have never seen the instructions for installing the mast in any genuine factory manual so you might have to seek assistance from a sparky.
