I've wired up quite a couple of vs head units but thats thanks to the colour coding chart on this site...A mates just asked me to hook up one in his camry and just wondering how i would go about distinguishing what wires which? -e.g constant, acc, speaker +- etc. i was told by an mechanic mate of mine i could use one of those fuse tester things..
you will def need a multi-meter tester...$10-$20 from any automotive store.
what i usually do is
first distinguish the power wires...Constant, Switch and Ground
-Ground should be obvious, Black
-Constant: with the keys out of ignition, use the multi-meter, black probe to the ground of the car and test each wire with the red probe, when you see 12+ volts, BINGO!
-Switch: with the ignition on ACC, do the same with the black probe and test each wire again with the red probe, when you see 12+ volts you've found the winner.
as for the speakers i use a AA 1.5v battery.
What you wanna do is try pair up the obivous colors
eg: dark green with light green, dark blue with light blue.
once all paired up you should have 4 set of wires for speakers
with the AA battery put one wire from a pair on the positive and negative terminals of the battery, you will hear a popping noise, find out which speaker the popping is coming from and there you go!
do the same with the remaining speaker wire.
remember to tag the each set of wires once you have distinguished them so you dont mix em up.
thanks for the quick reply guys
as for the AA battery thing you were talking about ridah..how would you tell which one would be positive and which wire would be negative, or will it only crackle when you've got the appropriate wires on right terminals on the battery? which would mean the wire on the positive terminal of the battery would be the positive wire when it crackles..hope that made some sense
yeah i know what ya mean mate... it will crackle regardless of which way you hook it up to the battery, most of the time the lighter color wires should be positive, what i usually do is, temporarily twist the wires that are correct together (maiking sure they wont short circuit of course)then turn the head unit on.
put the fader to the front...turn the bass up and listen.
if it sounds funny and theres no bass at all, that means the speakers are out of phase. turn off the car and switcha-roo the front speaker wires.
do the same with the rear.....then front speakers should be in phase as a pari and so should the rears
then balance out the fader and listen if the bass sounds right, if not just switch the polarities of rear OR front speakers
lol i hope you get what i mean.
if not, hopefully some one can explain in detail.

lol, just looking at that and I realised that the speaker wires are the same for the for a new 2007 toyota tundra....somethings never change eh?
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
