Default Hifonics Olympus 2412 12"

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a sub to upgrade from my Alpine Type R 12".
I am looking at a Hifonic Olympus 2412 12", which is rated at 2400rms at 1ohm and 4ohm stable.

Anyone have any experience in this sub before? anyone got other recommendations?

I am also looking for a amp (if I do go with the Hifonic), I was looking at the Hifonic Brutus 2008 (2000x1ohm) or the Brutus 2608 (2600x1ohm) which would be better for my sub? (if I do go with it)

That's good to hear Wouldn't wanna be down grading haha.

Have you heard/experienced this sub before? I'm getting it of ebay so I can't hear it until I get it.

You'd say the Brutus 2608?

The 2608 is pretty much perfectly matched for it if the specs you gave me are correct. I've seen a couple of these boys in action and have been suitably impressed...not blown away but impressed. With that being said, getting up close to a MTX Jackhammer didn't impress me either....now seing the Pioneer 8000 move was a sight to see!

I have given you the correct specs for the sub/amp (from what the manufactures website says)

Anyone else have anything else to add?

Hi Guys,

I've finally got my amp + sub installed!! Wasn't so impressed when the guy told me he doesn't think that the sub can reach near 2400rms like stated by the manufacturer. He says he's putting about 1000rms into the sub at the moment. He says that subs that produce that much power have a bigger coil. It is decent sounding but I was actually hoping for more than 1000rms.

The thing is, no one knows this sub, apparently it is 1ohm stable which a lot of the subs are not. I don't have a perfect enclosure at the moment.

Well, I have just done some research.. It says that the 2412 is a 2+2 coil (which means its a 4-ohm sub ye?) and with a single 4-ohm sub, I can't wire it to make a 1ohm sub correct? because if I wire it in parralel it would make a 2ohm load? Or have I got it all wrong? It is said both my amp and sub are 1ohm stable.

If it is possible to run a 1ohm load, can you provide me a link to show me how it's done. Running a 1ohm load wouldn't damage my sub in the short/long run would it? Wouldn't heat up etc?

I got my stuff tuned etc by Alberts and was wondering how they ran the system. I want to know if they have wired it correct for the best I can get for the gear I have. The sub and amp say 1ohm stable and the sub is rated for 2400rms but apparently I shouldnt get more than 1000rms from it.

yes...if its dual 2ohm then you can get 1ohm simply run your positive wire from coil 1 to positive on coil 2 and do the same with the negative.

Dont worry too much about the rating of the sub, this is just the power it can handle, and with a rating like 2.4kw you shouldnt have any trouble with the sub

Oh and Alberts know what their doing, so i'd imagine they've wired up the sub to produce a 1 ohm load to the amp.

You should see around 1-1.5kw daily from that combo, running it at 1 ohm will not damage anything, its all within the manufactors recommendations so its all good, and covered by warranty.

Also, what sort of enclosure do you have for it at the moment, the enclsosure plays a HUGE part in the sound of the sub. If its not suited to the car and/or subwoofer it can sound like a $20 Strathfield special. If its in a proper, ported enclosure (which is superior to sealed) than you will be getting the maximum potential from both amp and sub.

My mate made me a ported box... figured out the ports are too big (thanks .), if the sub specs say 2+2, does it mean it's a 4-ohm sub?

The guys at alberts don't think the sub can do over 1000rms.... that's why I'm questioning. I know that manufacturer specs aren't real world performance but 2400 to 1000 is a huge difference (note 2400 is at 1ohm), that's why I'm wondering if they've wired it to make it a 4-ohm load or something.

A Dual Voice Coil 2 ohm sub can be wired to run at either a 1ohm or 4ohm load.

The guys have already told you how to wire it to a 1ohm load so why don't you go out and check to see if thats how it is wired?!

Specs for the amp at 4ohm and 1ohm:
RMS Power @ 4 ohms: 850 watts x 1
RMS Power @ 1 ohm: 2600 watts x 1

So its either feeding up to 2600wrms or 850wrms into the sub depending on how its wired. You would assume it is wired for 1ohm and feeding the sub 2600wrms max.

As i said before, dont worry too much about the power handling specs of the subwoofer, its not like an amplifiers output ratings, impedance makes no difference on power handling, just box design.
It will take 2400wrms if not more... IF installed into a properly tuned box. Be very careful at the moment with it if its got too much port, as the tuning freq. of the enclosure will be high. Say it was tuned to 60hz, and you played music at full volume that had peaks around 40hz for more than a second or two....bye bye voice coils.
If by "too big" you mean too deep, then thats not really much of an issue when compared to the above situation.

If the sub specs state 2+2 ohm impedance, this means the sub can be wired to either 1 ohm or 4 ohm. As i said before power handling is irrelevant to what impedance the sub is wired to. One of the reasons they use dual voice coils is versatility....which means you can use with an amp that is 1 ohm stable or if you have an amp that wont run at 1 ohm then you can wire it to produce a 4 ohm load to the amp.

You can check to see if its wired at 1 ohm if you have a multimeter handy and dont wanna unscrew the sub. Just set the m/m to ohms and put the probes on the amps' speaker terminals...after a few seconds it should come to a rest around 1 ohm.
