Hi all,
I'm thinking of purchasing a Hifonic Olympus 2412 12" (2400rms) and a Hifonics Brutus 2608d (2600rms).
I think I will need a capacitor. But I've never used one before. What Farad rating am I looking for? I've read 1 Farad is for upto 1000rms.... If that's the case I'd need a 2.6but I think you can only get 1/2/4 Farad.
Anyone know any good brands? anything to look for? I'll be buying it from Ebay, so doesn't matter if it's not Australian (soundstream, rockford), I've had a look at Power Acoustic etc. Anything that is good let me know. I'm looking for one that is 0guage and 4guage compatible (I currently have 4guage running through my car but the gear I want says to use 0guage but that will be a later stage)
Is it worth getting one? or is it a waste of money?
Deck: Alpine 9887
Speakers: Hertz HSK165 XL
Amps: Audison SRx2, SRx4 & Alpine M350
Subs: 2x Alpine 10" Type S
if you run the corect size wiring you shouldnt need a cap
invest in a better battery will be better than a cap

erm, I would actually consider upping the power cable size to at least 2ga. If that animal reaches 2400wrms then it's gonna be sucking down about 200amps. 4ga ain't that good over the length of a car. No cap, just awesome battery and also run a short length from the negative terminal on the battery to the chassis of the car....thats often overlooked.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
Cap is fairly easy to install, but guys above are spot on, probably not required. Install the gear and if you do find out when you use the system that you need a cap, you can add it in without much effort. If you dont need it, you save your $ for something else. If you do need it, you can consider brands, prices etc then.
1000 wrms = 1frad
so you will need 4 farad,
I run one with my 650cc Battery and never had any issues.
A cap will just go inline with your power cable.
so disconnect it from the battery. chop the cable where you want the cap to sit then crimp a o ring connector on each size of the cut and wire it up its really quite simple.
good luck with it all.
A capacitor does not "just go inline with your power cable". It actually goes in parallel to everything. A power cable from battery to the positive terminal of the cap, then a power cable off that same positive terminal to your amps. A ground cable from the capacitors other terminal to ground.
A capacitor is not NEEDED. Your power wire is too small and your grounds should be upgraded too as was said above.
i think caps are a great idea... They provide a far more regulated power source and also a buffer for any sudden electrical surges say a massive bass section or you using flasher high beams.
sure, upgrade your power cable and earths etc. Thats the number one thing but i like capacitors...they may not be needed but i think they only add to the system rather than subtract from it. And for 100 bucks, why not?
oh and stoneX... the emphasis is on NOT rather than NEEDED... totally changes the meaning of your post.
aZk.
When you start using capital letters properly, you can start criticising which words I emphasise
From the original post he says he thinks he needs a capacitor... I was just telling him that he doesn't need one. That $100 could be spent upgrading his wiring which is needed. His amp at maximum output can draw well up in to the 200's of amps. 4ga cable is only rated up to 125-135A or so... It needs to be upgraded unless he wants a dead class-D amplifier from the voltage drop caused by his power cable.
