hey,
just to clarify, been doing my research on the running of 2 subs of a Mono amp...just to comfirm though...if i have 2 4ohm subs i need a 2 ohm stable amp still right?
and also if i had 2 2ohm subs..would a 2ohm amp still be ok?..
and also if the mono amp was say...800w RMS..this would mean subs would get 400W RMS each??...
thanks
Are they single voice coil or dual voice coil?
If single, 2x 4 ohm subs can be wired to either 2ohm or 8ohm. You would only wire them to run at 2ohm though.
Again if single, 2 2ohm subs will be best wired to 1ohm (which means the amp needs to be 1ohm stable), but they can also be wired to 4ohm (not 2ohm).
Whatever the amps specification is at that particular ohm rating, half that and thats how much power each sub will be getting (so yes if its 800wrms, each sub gets 400wrms).
ahh yerh alright,
well would single or dual be better?..
i know they are wired different but im thinking of 2 DVC 4Ohm subs...these will run at 2Ohm correct?..and ok..thanks for the info!![]()
2 DVC 4ohm subs will run at 1ohm, 4ohm or 8ohm.
Its probably better to get 2 DVC 4ohm subs anyway, thats what I have. That way you can run the amp at 1ohm, which in the end will be cheaper (an amp that is 800wrms @ 1ohm will normally be considerably cheaper than an amp that is 800wrms @ 2ohm with all other things being equal).
ah ok ok thats what i was going for..but thought it would be 2 ohm...so how would 2 subs be wired at 1 Ohm...wanted to get around a 1000wrms amp with 2 Alpine 1242D 12"..but they are not dual voice coil are they...works out nicely with the 500w rms rating on each sub....any ideas??
The Alpine 1242D subs are Dual Voice Coil 4ohm subs, so they can be wired to 1ohm yes.
Unfortunately the Alpine Amps are not 1ohm capable. My personal experience with Alpine amps has not been very good, so I don't like Alpine amps anyway.
However, if you want an Alpine amp, the MRP-M1000 is 1000wrmsx1 @ 2ohm. So it would run 500wrms into each sub at 2ohm. So instead of the 1242D subs, get 2x SWR-1222D subs which are the same sub but they are DVC 2ohm instead of 4ohm. That way they can be wired to run at 2ohm. To wire 2x DVC 2ohm subs to run at 2ohm, take the first positive from each sub and connect them both to the positive on the amp, then take the first negative from each sub and connect that to the negative on the amp. Then connect the remaining positive and negative on the first sub together, then do the same for the second sub.
Otherwise, find an amp from another brand that runs 1000wrms @ 1ohm for the 1242D subs.
alright thanks mate!..well im thinking of dodging the alpine amp as it is not 1 ohm stable...although is 1 ohm much better and worth having the subs hooked up to ?...and will i need a capacitor or change in alternator or battery with a 1000w rms amp...and 2 500w rms subs?
Just make sure your wiring is sufficient and you will not need a capacitor, alternator or battery change (unless your battery is coming to the end of its life anyway, which you may as well spend an extra $50 and get something decent).
1ohm is just more cost effective generally. If going to another brand I would suggest just going with 1ohm.
With the wiring, its not just the power wire... Make sure all your grounds are sufficient also. Battery to chassis ground wire should be the same sized wire as your battery to amp power wire. It might be worth upgrading the alternator ground and engine to chassis ground while you are at it.
