No R.C.A out put
Whats the go with some of the new head units that have no or only 1 R.C.A output for the sub . What happens when you want to hook up a 4 channel amp , do you have to use a converter ?

Either a)purchase one with the right amount of pre-outs, or
b) use a hi-lo converter to convert the speaker output of the HU to RCAs.

Or you can just use RCA "Y" splitter cables, which are very cheap and common.

yeh i have one of these converter type boxes for the standard h/u if your interested, i pulled it out of my vy, the previous owner put it in, i put a pioneer h/u in so i cut it out, can't remember what wires it connects to but i think the ends are still on it, so could match those colours up, if intersted in it just p.m. me and can work it out from there.

Ok, lets say you have a selectable sub or front out, and have have selected front. If you decide to Y split that, you may get amped front and rear, but you get absolutely no fade control. If you select sub, then Y split that, how are you going to get the higher frequencies out of that?

True, you lose fade control - and obviously you would select a full frequency option rather than a subwoofer setting. I have never used fade control anyway so I wouldn't miss it....it's simple to set up the "fade" using gain controls on the amp to the best setting and then just leave it alone.
I would consider the HU RAC outputs to ahve the cleanest signal, so I would prefer to use splitter cables rather than a high-to-low convertor. If the head unit has no RCAs then splitter cables aren't an option.

I don't like the idea of adapting or splitting and signal wires, messes with the signal and you get noise and distortion.
Don't be cheap get yourself a 3 or 4 pre out HU and run them off their own channels
you wouldn't regret it if you compared the sound quality

As with all car audio gear, you always get what you pay for. A $200 H/U will sound like a $200 H/U. A $1500 H/U will always sound like a $1500 H/U.
