we'll ive got $2500 to play with the stereo and can add abit more if its worth it..
looking at getting a nice tidy stereo for the statesman which will be a cruizer so needs to have a decent stereo..
was thinking something along the lines of this.
DVD headunit
6.5" splits up front
6" rear speakers
2x 12" subs
4chann amp for the speakers
2chan amp or monoblock for the subs.
now also what im also wondering what dvd headunits can support the steering wheel controls as i dont think any can.. only the normal mp3 ones..
and im not budgeting the amount for the install as that ill take care of hehe
not knowing that much about stereos so im asking out here for your help.
Hey,
I'm not hugely expert as this, but $2500 gets you a decent system.
I had thought about getting support for the wheel controls for my calais but it was either too hard or couldn't be done (can't remember why I didn't get it done), it's better if you get a remote for the deck (I hold remote in left hand, and resting on my centre console and right hand on the wheel, also good if you got people in the back etc. (well sometimes anyway haha)).
I had about $2500 to play with, I got mine stuff from alberts but I picked up:
New (at the time) Alpine deck with Ipod cable/remote, 3 pre-outs, blah blah;
2x Alpine Type R 6.5" Splits (set for front, set for back)
1x 12" Alpine Type R sub in alpine box
1x 4-channel Alpine amp (to power splits)
1x Mono Alpine amp (to power sub)
Dynamat in the boot
Guess that'll give ya an idea what you could expect. Probably better.
Deck: Alpine 9887
Speakers: Hertz HSK165 XL
Amps: Audison SRx2, SRx4 & Alpine M350
Subs: 2x Alpine 10" Type S
ahhh ok sounds pretty decent from what i know,
but hows it sound with splits front and back? thought it was only for fronts

Ive got that same setup but with 2 subs in the boot and its awesome. the clarity is great and the subs do a good job
I wouldn't bother with rear splits, scratch that i wouldn't bother with rears at all. Spend twice as much on your fronts and your ears will thank you.
For instance in my setup I have a decent set of splits in the front with a 4 channel amp. Each channel to each speaker (sort of a quasi biamp kind of setup) with both doors sound deadened. Very happy with the sound quality![]()
DVD Headunit i'd go Pioneer or likewise, but depending on quality you're looking at $800+. I got the Pioneer AVH-5950, which you can pickup for around $1500 and I highly reccomend it.
6.5" splits, spend as much as you can on these as thats where the sound quality is really going to come from. Then just spend $100 or $150 on some 6.5" rear co-axials. Price really depends on brand though.
The subs really depend on the brand you get but one good quality 12 will normally outperform two average 12's (everything else being equal).
Same price depends on brand theory for amps as well. Pick a brand and go from there. Most people like to stick with the one brand and aesthetics often come into it as well (otherwise fusion would be broke by now).
Only reason I got the splits in the rear is because the coaxials would of costed me the same amount. So I thought why not go with splits there aswell, passengers will appreciate it better.
I was happy with the setup for about 6 months, then I decided I needed more bassjust brought a 2400rms 12" sub and amp to power it.
Eventually I'll switch the Type R splits with something a little better, they are only rated 75rms.
Ah yeah, thought I'd mention, if you don't mind ebay, have a look, get some good deals there. Places like Alberts and JB Hi are over-priced in my opinion. I always disliked ebay because I thought it was dodgey but I brought my amp+sub from there and think it's great. I also brought my DJ gear, (1x Crown XTi2000, 1x Crown XTi1000, 1xJBL MRX518, 1x pair Yamaha S215V), they work perfectly! Perfect condition on arrival. You look in a place like Kosmic Sound and for the XTi2000 you pay $1599, I paid $600 brand new. Anyway just a thought.

See i originally thought of spending a couple hundred on new rears but then decided against it as 90% of the time there is only 1 or 2 people in my car anyway (that and most people that ride in my car have no appreciation of what sound quality is!). I figured having only fronts would produce a better sound stage for me so I actually decided against rears and disconnected the ones I already had in there.
Having that extra couple hundred to spend on my fronts meant I could go from proposed alpine type r/boston sl65 territory and grab some boston pro60s instead. Well worth it imo!
ooo that crown gear looks nice! What sorta music you play? Atm I'm living with a dnb DJ.. its pretty cool having a studio in the house to muck around with!
mate for $2500 u should get a fairly decent setup it really depends on wat music u listen to and water ur after alot of bass or more a nice crisp clear sound..
for the spilts id recomend focal splits i was playin round with em the other day and in my opionin there far betta then type r splits and this like and for not much more..
get a decent amp to power it and sum decent size cable..
Yer guys, the Type R's are good... not great thoI'd recommend having a search around, have a listen to different setups, and yer like you said, it also depends on the music you listen to. Just gotta weigh up which is more important for you, for example I like my drum n bass, dance, trance kinda stuff with a lot of bass, that's why I upgraded my sub before my speakers haha (don't think most people would tho)

Like mentioned by Bezz (if I could go back before buying the Type R), I'd definately do what he said, I'd just buy front splits and leave the rear stock or even just buy two sets for the front hehe. In my car It's only myself or myself and my gf. So no one in the back to hear them.

rear speakers are always nice to have...trust me, when you don't have them and then you hear them...you wonder what came over you! lol it's nice to have that fill and it definetly helps in setting up your front stage.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
as been said shop around even if u take a cd of music like u listen to and ask them to play it in the sound boards then u can get a rough idea of wat it will sound like of course it will be differnt in ur car to the sound board but gives u a rough idea of differnt combinations
Bezz,
I haven't mixed any of my own stuff yet, I'm just starting out. Getting it properly set up and everything, trying to learn how use the gear properly. I usually run Dance, DnB, Hip-Hop kinda stuff.

All I can say from my experiences recently is to buy your components from audio stores on Ebay.
I recently shopped around & literally saved a few hundred dollars by buying my gear this way.
I just picked up the latest Alpine HU (CDA-9887) including the KTX-100EQ Imprint Sound Manager for $618.00 including delivery.
I also saved a packet from retail stores by buying all Rockford Fosgate gear (front component splits, a 12" sub & 4 channel amp) at way below retails prices.
