Hi,
I just installed a new sound system and soon to upgrade to a 100amp alternator and have a 1.5f capacitor installed.
When i go on holidays i want to hook my car battery up to the power so that i can set my laptop sound to the car.
I was wondering how to connect the battery to the power so i dont need to leave the car running.
System will include 3 amps, 2 600 RMS subs, 2 x 6*9 and 2x Splits.
What do you recommend?
why not just get a battery charger?
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
You could always take a battery charger and have that hooked up...only way you would really be able to do it without draining your battery
um.... unless the stereo draws more than the charger can supply.....
oh kk so all i need is a big arse charger
lol
and as long as i dont max it should be alright.
right...should only set you back 500-700 bucks![]()
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
lol....
How much power do the amps make (rms) ?
Could always get one of these;
Jaycar Electronics
Puts out 13.8v at around 40A.
I think you'll have to disconnect the amps' power cables from the battery and connect it to the PSU above, and connect a 8awg earth cable to the negative terminal. Not too sure about that tho.
Saw a few of the cars at Autosalon using these babies to power their systems while on show.
chances are that one won't be enough. especially with 3 amps.

Yeah,
2 amps at 600 RMS (mono sub ones)
1 amp at 600 or so rms
Do you wanna run the system at full volume?
I would suggest buying one of the PSU and slowly turn the system up, that unit has an amperage display so you should be able to turn it up maybe just under half volume and the amps shouldnt pull more than 40A...it'll mainly pull alot of current on bass notes.
Buy one, see how far you can turn it up before the system starts pulling 35 or so amps, and if that volume isnt enough then you'll need two.
or buy a cheaper stereo and run it from the GPO......
Yeah, half is damn loud still.
And it might just b easier to take a power adapter (4 pronga) and my mini 5.1 speakersand laptop power
lol
thanks anyway

Yeah i would probably go with that option![]()
considering that music has transients, and isn't a constant load on the power supply and battery, a 40 amp PSU will probably be enough.
Jaycar Electronics
the one above should do just fine, and its cheaper than the other one posted as it doesn't have all the features.
Yeah i guess that would be a option.
But i think the speakers and extension cord will b easier![]()

Lol. Our Alpine demo board has 2 40 amp regulated power supplies, we took one out and the music cut out running 4 speakers and one sub and mid volume. " She might be right Mate"
maybe just buy another battery, that way you could have one on charge while you use the other to play music with, but ur car will prob drain the battery faster than a charger will charge it
LOL
See above what im doing
5.1 ftw
that system will not charge a battery man...it puts out a regulared 13.8 Volts....without a load. that won't charge a battery.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
Its irrelevant anyways cos he's going with the 5.1 speakers off the laptop.
But....
As the PSU dosent have a regulator (like an alternator) you run the risk of overcharging the battery.
a cars alternator is heavily regulated...at over 14 volts. The amount of current that can be supplied for charging purposes is what varies.
Yes, voltage is a little lower at idle..but not less then half a volt.
13.8V with a maximum current draw of 40A is not going to sustain a battery AND a car stereo.
