    Default 6.5" Speakers mounting

    Hi fellas,

Just wondering If I need to have some space behind the magnet of the 6.5"? the speaker is only rated for 70RMS. If I do, how much should I leave? When I got my sub box made it said I needed 3" behind the magnet so was wondering if It's the same with a normal speaker.

    Help greatly appreciated.

Edit: Sorry, I don't have my manual anymore ... actually I never had one to begin with :S

The reason you need space in a sub enclosure is to echo the bass, making it sound deeper. I guess in theory if you did the same with your speaker they would sound bassier but, no you don't need to leave space for your 6.5" speakers infact the tighter smaller airtight hole you fit them in the clearer it will sound. Your not supposed to be able to hear the back of the speaker.

Are you mounting them in the parcel shelf?
ive got 6.5 fusiobn in mine, and they sound great.
theyr sitting in the same spot at the stock 6" ones.
just had to modify the shelf a little bit, But you should be fine with the space you have.
Like timmos said, u dont need to hear the back of ur speaker.

Im planning to mount them on the actual front door trim just about my stock speaker. But I don't want to cut a whole in the door trim so I wanted to get some spacers that will come out far enough so the magnet just touches the door trim, but there won't be ANY or ~1mm space between the magnet and door trim so the speaker doesn't come that far out and I hit my leg on it.

I was just wondering if that would be a problem or not.

the reason the manual said to leave space behind the magnet for the sub is for airflow to keep the sub cool not to echo the bass.

first off why do you want to mount on the door trim? why not use the stock location and make a spacer to fit the speaker? you want a nice solid mounting surface. a door trim is not solid it will move around. also you will have aid escaping around the edges of the trim where it meets the door. insteada make a good solid MDF spacer and attatch it to the door. also dont forget to deaden and seal the door for best performance

The reason I'm not using the stock location is because there is already a speaker in that place , I'm gon have two sets of splits in the front. You recon it'll vibrate the door trim too much??

you're going to be far better installing one set of splits really well than having two sets of splits installed averagely. Yes your door trim will most likely vibrate, it will certainly resonate and flex, a door trim does not make a suitable enclosure. A door at that matter doesnt make a great enclosure but it is a hell of a lot better.

is this new set of speakers the same as the existing ones or different? if different it will no doubt sound far worse. if they are the same it will take a whole lot of time and processing to even get it sounding close to good.

They are both the same splits. I'm trying to get my dB at the front regardless of the back without having to spend money because I'm going on holiday for 3 months. I have Alpine Type R 6.5" splits in the front mounted properly in the stock speaker holder thingy and at the moment a pair of Alpine Type R 6.5" splits in the rear parcel shelf. The only way I can think of getting more dB in the front is to move the back speakers into the front as well. I want 2 sets of speakers in the front but don't really want to cut into the door trim so I thought about just getting spacers.

Just fade it towards the front, or amp your front splits if you haven't already done so. There is no way you are listening to anything loud enough that properly set up type-R's can't handle

for both of you that want more ouptput have you sound deadened your doors and sealed the service holes in the doors? this makes a massive difference in midbass reproduction. before you start spending money on gear make sure you have the install done right first.

if you need more bass add a sub, no speakers can reproduce sub bass properly. if you want even more midbass your better off adding a larger driver in the front like a 7" or 8" midbass driver but then you are going to be wanting to move into 3 way front stage territory as a 7" or 8" driver is going to be lacking in midrange quality.

if you were to just stick anopther pod on top of the existing one you would definitely have to cut a hole in the door behind it, as it needs the air behind the speaker (inside the door) to act as an enclosure.

definitely look at a better set of splits first, with heaps of power. deaden the **** out of the doors and see what you think. otherwise buy a set of 3 way splits, which wont really come cheap... plus theres the custom fibreglass pod you'll need for all that.

the 6.5" splits in my ute are more than capable of seriously damaging my hearing, I just cant have it cranked all the way for a few mins

I think he meant in the door... behind the door trim.

You don't need extra space behind the magnet, if it fits - it fits. Take the trim off, remove the plastic spacer and trial fit the speaker, if it doesn't fit you'll either need to modify the spacer, or build/buy a new spacer. You can fit 6.5" in the doors no worries.
