Couldn't give you an answer to your question, but $2K will get you a nice sound system if you do it right :P Evidently he didn't hehe.

    is it possible? Yes,

but at the same time it will cost you 2k in electrical upgrades and heavy duty inverters, alternator ect to actually make the 240v power you need to power the thing.

Also IMO House speakers sound like crap in cars, your mate obviously got ripped off as 2k would get you a pretty decent sounding setup

Yeah, all sorts of reasons why people steer clear of this.

Home audio speakers tend to be of the 8ohm variety which means most head units and car amps won't be able to drive them.

If you use the home theatre amplifier, you may have cooling and vibration issues because they aren't designed for that environment.

To run it off 240v AC power you'll need an inverter, probably at a pretty high rating, which will be taking a DC current, turning it into AC, then back to DC again, a pretty inefficient process. This may also have a negative effect on your electrical system too, particularly alternator and battery as rcnugget said.

You can spend as much as you want on car audio. $300 will already get you a setup that sounds twice as good as the factory stuff, $2k will make it sound bloody good if you choose the right components and don't get ripped.

If you have a budget and a particular goal in mind (eg lots of bass, good sound quality etc) post it up and there are tons of people who can give you and idea of what you'll get for your money.

The problem you'll have, apart from what the guys have said above, is that a home audio system will nearly always sound crap in a car. The home system was designed for exactly that, a home (or room).
