Hey guys, I have been scouring the forums for examples of some simple boot installs, but have failed to find many examples at all. I was just after some photo's/suggestions of how to set up my amp in my boot.
I have 2 subs in a twin box, with an alpine mono bloc, and will also be adding another amp soon to run the front splits. I would like so idea's as to how to mount the amps in the boot so I can still use the boot.. The way I have the amp now it's just sitting on the boot floor, held down on bit's of wood with some screws so as to stop it from sliding around, but I'd like a more permanent solution. So if anyone has any examples of some simple boot set ups, nothing fancy with big fiberglass set-ups will be good.
Thanks
Well you can mount 2 largish amps on the metal wall behind the back seats and still have a dual 12 inch enclosure in the boot. You will still have heaps of boot space
iv got 2 amps screwed to a piece of wood, and the piece of wood is screwed to the back of the seats, then a dual sub box sitting in front of it, the amps never overheat and all the cables are hidden from view. easy to check the amps if something goes faulty by just unplugging the speaker wire attached to the sub box and taking it out to get to the amps. Here is a photo of my boot.
This photo are a bit old, my cables are neater now, but you get the idea of how they are mounted

Nice sxc_sound.. How close do you have your subs pushed up to the amps? Do you leave a certain amount of room to allow for air flow? or just push it back til it's almost flush.. I'm really paranoid about over heating my amp, although it's a decent alpine one, so hopefully the engineers of the amp would have taken into consideration heat dissipation...
I will give it a go putting it behind the seat, but what would be the first signs of the amp getting too hot? Just so if it does start getting a bit hot in there, I can fix it up quick smart.
Cheers
P.S. Oh and thanks to the admin for moving this thread to the car audio place... I think I accidentally posted this in the My Ride sub-forum :S, so thanks for stopping me from looking like an idiot.
look at the top of this forum there is a heap of pics of boot installs
My sub box hits the roof before it gets too close to the amps lol, there is about a 10cm gap between the amps and the sub box, i have never had a problem with overheating, my amps have heat sinks on the sides which spreads the heat pretty well. I dont really know how to tell if they are getting too hot, maybe someone else can help with that one, other then touching it to feel.
also consider the parcel shelf, i have a Alpine RP-M1001 mounted there and if you have seen these amps you will know they arent small. sure people will argue about heat but I havent had any problems with it
I did think about that, and it is originally what I wanted to do, but that would be more tricky as I would have to drill holes in the parcel shelf, and then make sure the brackets used are strong enough to hold the 2 amps up on the wood shelf. I think I'm just going to go with the mounting of the amp behind the subs. I've got some MDF which I will screw the amp too, and then connect the wood to the back of the chair somehow...
Have people just screwed into the back of the chair?
I didnt use any brackets I just screwed a piece of 16mm MDF straight into the shelf, worked a treat. I also made sure I went to town with dynamat and put some thickish closed cell foam where the MDF touches the metal
ok i just went out to the car and took a couple of shots, afraid i dont have any build photos, but there wasnt much to it, just spent a good deal of time planning it out before doing any cutting or drilling
all i did was get a sheet of cardboard cut it to the size i wanted after checking and triple checking in the boot, I then used that as my template for the MDF, cut that out, checked in the boot again, trimmed some more off, painted it, then i marked where the supports were on the MDF and drilled there. i countersunk the screws into the MDF as they are sitting underneath where the amp sits now.
it was a bit of a pain in the butt, but now that it is done I am more than happy with the result.
cheers
Ahk I see what you've done. I wasn't sure about mounting the amp upside down, hence my reasoning for brackets to create a shelf type thing, but if mounting the amp upside down doesn't really matter, than maybe I'll look at doing that too. I do like the look of the amp, so I would love to have to on display to a certain extent, show it off a bit.
Thanks mate![]()
yeah i was warned about mounting it upside down but hell i figure the amp doesnt work that hard, it is an SQ system after all
another option you might want to look into is doing a false floor and having the amp flush with the floor or behind perspex, this works pretty well too, and you can even make carpet covers to go over the perspex when using the boot
good luck with your install anyway, be sure to post some pics when your finished
will do mate. Even though it's not going to be anything special lol, but I'll still show what I've managed to come up with.
Thanks for the ideas
people will talk all day about the amps over heating being mounted upside down on the parcel shelf but I"ve never seen an issue with it so far. Heat rises yeah? But the components that get hot are still screwed directly to the heatsink inside the amp.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!
so Tasmaniak, you're saying that you don't think it matters if the amp is mounted upside down?
Did he maybe drop it then just leave it on the ground for 3 hours? If it is just sitting upside down then there is no way it can be ****ed. Unless everything inside was just sitting on the circuit board not attached to anything else

Oh ok then mate. Well I think I'll mount them sideways, and not upside down, even though that will decrease the effectiveness of the heat sinks.. Hopefully the amps will still be alright.
Ok, thought I'd finish this thread off with showing you guys what I managed to do. I ended up just mounting them on the backs on the car seats, on some MDF which I cut to size, and painted black. I'm going to make a thread on it, how I did it with photos and stuff so I'll post a link to that in here once I've done it. Here is a couple of photos showing it for now.
Lots of wires
With subs pushed back

thats exactly how i did mine, piece of mdf painted black bolted to the back seat, nice and neat. Well after you clean up the cables. i should get a photo of how i ran my cables when i get around to it
haha yeah I know what ya mean, very messy wires lol. I guess I'll get in there and cut them shorter so that they reach with only a little bit of extra length, that way I don't have all the excess running everywhere.
Tell ya what though, I was getting very frustrated, took me 3 attempts to find a bolt that's the right size! Tip for everyone else, measure first! lol. Don't go by guesswork.
