I have the chance to buy 2 x 15" JBL 1000 watt peak power subwoofers for $100
right now i'm running 1x 12" JBL 1000 watt peak power sub which is no where near enough power.
I've been told 15" subs are only really suited for real ganster musicnot really my style....
Would it just be better to save the $100 and buy better 12" subs
Suggestions?
My understanding of it would be, the larger the sub the more power it would draw to produce the tones and move the cone fast enough, bigger doesn't always mean louder/better? Hence your sensitivity@1w@1m would be better on a smaller sub. I'm not sure what qualifies as 'real gangster music' lol, but I'd imagine that would be anything with low, long tones instead of deep tones in quick succession.
Of course, I could be, and probably am, full of ****![]()
Obviously this is going to draw much more power.
I'm not worried about the amp not being able to handle it but will i need a capasitor for the battery?
Dunno, guess you'll have to wait for someone smarter than me to see your threadI'd imagine with 2 1000wPMPO subs though, you'd need a cap to power them without any adverse effects, ie. headlights flickering with current draw etc. Guess it'd depend on the RMS power output.
250 RMS at 4Ohm.
That's all i know about them so far.
But then my amp is rated
Power 4 Ω 200W
The size myth is just that. As long as the box is built to the correct specs, the subs are given enough power, and the system is properly tuned then it will sound great. In saying that a 15" has more cone area then a 12" so it has the ability to move more air.
If it was me I would go 12s instead. The box would be heaps bigger for 15s, which means you will be sacrificing more boot space.
Check out the pics of my boot in my 'My Ride' thread......you will see I don't have boot space anymore
Originally it was the reason I went for 12s, but I have since changed my boot install which now means I don't have a 'practical' boot...
If you have an amp (or are willing to get an amp) that has enough power to run them and are willing to build the correct box then go for 15s. This is of course if you like bass...
The boot looks greatwell done
My monoblock should def be powerful enough to power them.
MTX 3401 (something along the lines of that)
Retail price is around $600
I was looking at getting 1x 12" rockford p3 in a ported box. but thats later on down the track... costs around the $600 mark.
I'm not overly fussed about bootspace. but i've already got one amp mounted to back seat.
2 x 250w RMS subs... 1 200w RMS amp.. Enough to power them?
Either I'm having a mental blank/have misunderstood something, or you will be underpowering your subs to death.
I don't really know,
But i've used a fair few monoblocks and this mtx one by far has the hardest punch to it.
Heres the specs.
maybe you can make sense of them more than i can

Unless I'm mistaken somewhere, essentially it boils down to 200w RMS shared between subs that need ~500w RMS under full load. That's quite a big difference, if you turned it up loud it would cause clipping, frying your voicecoils. The quickest way to kill a sub, short of plugging it directly into a 240VAC wall socket.
You could probably get away with one of those subs on that amp, but definitely not two.
Anybody who disagrees, feel free to correct me. I'm just going by my knowledge of it, which is far from comprehensive.
I was under the same impression, but i've had other monoblocks with HIGHER rating RMS and this one is just 10x clearer and pumps harder than the others.
although you've convinced me not to get the 2x 15" subs.
I think i'll just wait for the 12" rockford p3.
I'd imagine clarity and everything would come through with build quality, sources of interference, where the cables were run etc.. Not to mention gain settings etc.
Anyways, good to hear you've made a decision, let's hope I haven't steered you into the wrong one eh?I think I would've made the same one. You're also keeping more boot space, even if that wasn't a huge priority, it's still a bonus hehe.
Thanks for the advise.
