Hi Guys, I've got a Kenwood KDC6026MP which I've had for a while, and it has every function i've ever wanted in a head unit, but when I bought my new car (new to me) 92 vp calais, there was no stereo in there when I hooked it up it didn't run speakers, worked fine but no speakers, I've since found out that the right front speaker factory wires had started touching somewhere, now im guessing that since my speaker wires were touching that the internal amp in the stereo is screwed. It still runs external amps fine (as thats what im using at the mo) but I want to get rid of the external amps and just run my h/u with 4 speakers as simple as I can.
Does anyone know if my head unit can be fixed? i.e for a stereo repairer or is there no point, and I should just buy a new H/U. The equivalient I have found is around $900, but doesn't look anywhere as nice as mine, and kenwood have also dropped off a few features that i like on my one.
Usually when there is a short on any of the speaker wires it goes into a protection mode so you could try removing the unit and bench testing it with a spare speaker.
Yeah just try it with a spare speaker not hooked up to any in car speakers and if it doesn't work, then good chances are its an internal fault.
I guess then it would up to you whether its worth getting fixed vs. a new unit.
Assuming there is an issue with the internal amps of the HU,
Would it not be easier/money saving/less time consuming to just purchase a small 4 channel amp and mount it somewhere out of the way (If space is your issue for an amp)?
Just a suggestion.
As the guys above have said, try taking it out and testing it. As it is worth a little bit it, you might be lucky enough to have an electronic circuit in there designed just to protect the internal amp in the case of this fairly common fault.
If you find it is stuffed, you can still use the head unit running the speakers through an external amp as Timmos suggested.
You could also repair the head unit. Usually just a single IC, about 10 legs on it, stuck onto the heatsink that makes up the rear of the head unit. Will be very obvious when you open it up. Call the manufacturer, tell them the numbers on the IC and they should be able to give you a price. The last pioneer IC I was quoted on was about $90.
thanks. ill try that, I have it running off a 600w 4ch amp at the moment, i just don't want to run an amp anymore cos i miss my speaker functions on the h/u as it by passes them for the Pre outs. It has 1xfront preout and 1xrear/sub switchable. at the moment the amp is running off the 1xfront preouts with y splitters and i also have a sub connected.
