    Default What speakers?

    hey guys,

I am looking at replacing the rear speakers in my parcel shelf as my stock ones are now distorting. I quite like Pioneer speakers and audio gear and have been looking around. I have found some 260watt 6" Kenwood speakers for $80 and some 220watt 6" Pioneer ones for $83. Well my question is will I notice the 40watt difference and would I be better off getting the Kenwood ones?

    cheers.

Your first step is to ignore the power ratings, as I assume you will be running them off the head unit.
Of the 2 you have listed, I would say the pioneer ones will probably sound better and would probably be pretty good, but I would recommend some alpine type-s's for about $140.

Whatever you end up getting, put them in the front doors, and put the front stock ones in the rear so that you have the better speakers up the front where you sit. Unless you plan on upgrading the rest soon of course

I wouldn't say ignore the power rating, ideally you'd match the power handling of the speakers to the power rating of the amplifier/head unit, so if your head unit produces 50w/ch get 50w speakers.

And of course make sure you're looking at RMS ratings, not peak/max power etc.

yeah i understand that rms rating stuff... but i am thinking of replacing the front speakers eventually as well as they are starting to sound a bit off. but atm they will be running off off of the headunit but might get amped at a later date not sure yet.

Well best thing to do would be find a place which has the speakers hooked up to a demo board and listen to them. Never buy speakers just for the power rating though, it's the sound that matters at the end of the day.

    As above.

You havent listed the RMS ratings of those speakers, but unless they will eventually be amped its pointless as they'll only be getting around 20 watts rms from the headunit (50x4 is max output, rms is closer to 18-23rms).

If your not incredibly picky about the sound quality and your not amping the speakers. I'd be hitting ebay for some of those $8 speakers

Unamp'd your not going to notice a huge difference

If that were the case he'd be better off sticking with the stock ones

True. Make sure you listen to a variety of speakers before deciding

yeah one of my mates has some of the kenwood ones in his ford laser and they sound pretty good but i seem to like pioneer audio gear better than kenwood so i am leaning more towards getting some of them

When you go into JB Hi Fi to buy the speakers, make sure to listen to both sets and see which type you prefer......you can even take a CD that you like.

Also, the Kenwoods may some good in your mates car, but would probably sound different in your car (as they are two different cars with different speaker mounts / doors), the best way to listen to a set of speakers is a demo board. Its still not a true representation of how they will sound in any car, but atleast you can compare different types right there and then.

Yeah, I second that. Huge difference between cars - mounting locations and acoustics and all that, it does matter. Even between my VT Exec, and VZ SS, which are physically the same shape, but the VZ has better sound deadening and is more "solid" there is a difference.

In my VK Calais all I have is a pioneer head unit, 2 Pioneer 6x9's in the parcel shelf un-amped, no front door splits. I also have 2 boss audio 650 watt rms subs powered by some random amp I got off ebay. It sounds pretty sweet, an you wouldn't want it any bassier. I'm missing front speakers badly though, you have to turn up the stereo a decent amount to get the sound through properly. I don't wanna **** up my door trims though, and I dunno if I can be bothered finding speakers small enough to replace the ones in the dash that aren't used.

If you think it sounds good with that setup, good splits will blow your mind.

You can get 4" MB Quarts I think.

Yeah, i would go with a decent brand of 4" splits....if youre head-unit dosent have high pass filters then i would buy a small amp (with high pass filters) to run the splits. As stated above they wont play much under 300hz, so a high pass filter on or even around 300hz would be ideal. You'll notice alot more clarity to music, especially in the vocal / high range area.
