whats the best way of getting sound from the sub, i have a sealed enclosure at the moment but do yous think i should just cut a hole out of it and change it to ported.
id say that it also applies to what the sub specs are, and what the manufacture has to say?

Well to a point yes the sub needs to be put in the right sized box with the port tuned to a specific frequency. But i have cut lots of port holes in sealed boxes with good results. The great thing about a ported box is it makes the sub more efficient and gives a bigger boom, but you lose tightness and sound quality. You have to ask yourself if you want sound quality bass or spl bass and go from there. You can try and make a compromise but you have to be prepared to try different boxes and subs and port lengths.
Have a search on google for "sealed vs ported".
There is a heap of info about. Taken from Sealed vs. Ported Enclosures | Klaus Audio
"Personal preference and size limitations will both play a role in the decision between sealed or ported enclosures. If you have the room, and you want to get loud, go with a ported box. If you're limited on space or are looking for the best sound quality possible, it would generally be best to go with a sealed box. Either way, as long as the specifications of the subwoofer box are within the subwoofer manufacturer's recommended box specifications, you should be safe with either choice. "

Sometimes it depends on the actual woofer you are using also. Manufacturers will generally put a sealed volume with a ported recommendation. But usually drivers have a preferred method of installation.
So depending on what woofer you are using can also sometimes determine what set up you should run. Do some research on the sub you are running, see what other people have gotten from the woofer in both sealed and ported and go from there.
Not much but its something to consider.
I like my bass like i like my women.... Tight!
So i go sealed.
