Hey guys how is everyone?
Im currently running a Kenwood Headunit, a 250W Sony Xplod Amp with 150w Clarion Speakers & Tweeters wired to it, a 600W Pioneer 4CH amp with a 600W Clarion and a 1200 Kingwood sub running of of it.
Only problem is, when I go over bumps, (such as railway line or speed bumps) the sony amp goes into protection mode.
I think its really screwed up considering the xplod 250W amp is a 2Ch which i managed to get at one stage, Tweeters, 6x9's and a sub running of it without it going into protection mode ONCE.
Now I have less and when i hit a light bump, pop, protection mode kicks in.
Any one have any ideas on what might be wrong and how to fix it?

Thats the amp there, i reckon its the XM-502Z model.
My other amp, pioneer is GM6300F
either somethings shorting in your wiring, or theres a dry solder joint or something running loose inside the amp causing it to short and go into protection
Any ideas on how to fix?
check your wiring for a start. at the amp, at the speakers, tweeters and crossovers and anywhere the speaker wire passes through an area where it might have cut throuth.
crossover?
i guess you have the speakers and tweeters without the crossover box, so ignore that.
OK, that model amp had 3 triggers to the Protection circuit.
Overheating
Short circuiting at speaker terminals
And when a DC current is generated.
When in protection mode the status LED will be red instead of green. Is this whats happening? The unit should shut down itself and from memory those ones don't restart by themselves. The later model amps jump straight out of protection mode after a certain time (or in overheating, when it's cooled down) and resume normal operation.
Yep thats right.
Just went for a cruise before, there is a feedback noise when the car is turned over to accessories coming from the speakers, like a high pitch constant beep, then when the car is started, the amp goes straight into protection mode.
Guess its definately not an overheating problem then!
If your saying only when started, i dont think it would be a short, but just double check it. If you have a spare speaker lying around connect it to one of the channels and disconnect the normal speakers. If it still does it then your amp is generating DC current. Which means the amp is faulty!
Isolated the amp today, disconnected all speakers and turned over, started up, no protection mode.
Connected each speaker & tweeter 1 by one, no protection mode.
Once all connected, when car is in accessories, amp starts up, no protection mode.
When the engine is running, poof, protection mode kicks in.
What the??
Are the Clarion mids and tweeters wired using a crossover or not?
If theres no crossover have you just got a mid and tweeter running off each channel?
Maybe the amp isnt 2 ohm stable?
no crossover, so the mids and tweeters are wired in to 1 channel EACH
im not sure, but ive had 6x9's tweeters and a 12" sub running off it before, same wiring and all, and it NEVER went into protection mode.
Weird. Check the battery voltage. Should be about 14.4V. Maybe the alternator is faulty and overcharging causing the amp to go into protection mode (although alien- hasnt listed overvoltage as a trigger - worth checking anyway). Thats the only thing that I can really think would change while the engine is running.
kopper69, the reason i didn't mention over voltage, is because that doesn't trigger the protection mode in that model!![]()
im going to disconnct and set it up all again, considering it was running fine for about a week before it started doing this. Ill let you guys know what happens tomorrow!
just reattached the grounds, amp powered up and ran fine with the motor on, but then when i went over a bump again it went straight back into protection mode..
under your 6x9s youll find its prolly the terminal touching metal for a split second and causes amp to go protection
its a very very very common problem when ppl put 6x9 is rear
amps only go into protection when a spkr wire touches ground somewhere in your system make sure all terminals are away from metal
turn cd player on and grab ya 6x9 and move it up and down if might cut out if so theres ya prob
Had a good look, doesnt seem to be anything to unusual, although both ground wires for the amp's are close to each other, if they touched when the car jumped, would that send the amp into protection mode?
I don't think the ground wires touching should be a problem, as I have had grounds mounted together in the past. But I have a similar question. I just have one 12in Alpine Type-S hooked up to an Infinity Mono amp. When I have the sub bridged and turn up the volume to a reasonable level, the bass will hit for a second and trip, coming back on instantly and repeating the process. It still does it if the amp is only turned up to half input capacity. Is the amp too weak for the sub, visa versa, or could there be something wrong with one of them?
headsr... It sounds like the amp isn't getting enough power. Double check your grounding.
I was afraid of that. This is the first car Ive paid someone to hook up my amp cables bc its a newer car and I didnt want to start gutting it myself. Im pretty sure its grounded under the back seats. But guess I dont have a choice. Thanks.
If you have a multimeter put it on the positive and negative terminals on the amp, get a friend to turn the volume up one notch at a time and see if the voltage drops below 11v. Try it with the car running and off too.
150db in a commodore =
my clarion amp is goin to melbourne tommorrow for the second time to get this problem fixed.
first time it was a rca was not soldered to the main bourd of the amp proprely.
this time is just doin it wen turned up to quickly or just turned up to loud. take it back to where u bought it and see wat they say.
the guy who put mine in sed something about the subsonick frequency running throught the amp powering the sub can also make it cut as a saftey feature. this can be true cause mine does it alot more on songs with very low bass
hope that helps ya work out wats wrong
