I have a 2004 Series II Executive with standard stereo system. I currently run my ipod through an FM transmitter but am sick of the volume inconsistency and interference and want to be able to plug my ipod directly into the stereo system.
Whats the easiest way to do this? If I buy the cable could I pull the stereo unit out and wire it up myself?
thanks for any help
I dont think its possible, well easily anyway. The guy you wanna ask about this is Phreddy, he's got a fair bit of knowledge on the stock VY head-unit.
thanks I have emailed info@asr-audio.com.au and am waiting on a reply.
BTW I'm in Brisbane/GC area if anyone can recommend a place that could do it.
Still no reply from asr audio.
I rang a few car sound companies and none seemed to be interesting in modding the stereo. One talked me into a hard wired FM transmitter that they assured me would be better than the plug in belkin I'm using atm, but unfortunately I found it to be not much different. Still getting surges in the volume and interference. Wasted $150 on that.
Can anyone put me onto someone that could help?
Phreddy is fairly busy atm with his work and planning the roadshow etc.
So that'll be the reason for the delay
hey shack,
phreddy is currently on his roadshow - left for melbourne this morning. I am booked in for this week to get the same thing as you want done..
i am pretty sure he is heading to brissy at some stage in the coming weeks, i don't know if he has the ability to check his emails at the moment.. he probably would.. try: phreddy@asr-audio.com.au he said he was having problems with his 'info@asr' email address.
all the info is on the asr website, check that out for any commonly asked questions as well as this forum - there is heaps of info here, the prices vary slightly on the roadshows - you pay a small travel fee. but his work is excellent and the he's only guy who does it right!
he'll probably reply within the next couple of days after you email him at the 'phreddy@' address, otherwise let us now and i'll pass your name on to him when i see him.
cheers.
i have a vx and i use the tape deck with one of those tapes that has the wire that plugs in to the earphone socket
not sure if u have a tape deck in ur car but i do
plus i want a diffrent stero anyway factory one not loud enough.
but hay then i would lose my cool stereo buttons on the steering wheel.
phreddy can also add rca output from your factory head unit (vy/vz) to allow you to connect it to an amp if you wanted meaning you could get louder sound out of your factory unit.
also meaning you keep your steering controls and all the stock features of the stock system. plus the original look which is a major advantage in my opinion.
the ipod input mod would be a better option for connecting you ipod to your system using the factory unit - clearer sound, neater, looks completely stock.
i'd spend the money on the mod over a new head unit any day. but if the tape thing works for you and you're happy with it then greatplus pretty sure the mod hasn't been done to a vx yet anyway.
I also went down the road of looking at modding the existing unit. Yes, there are a lot of advantages to it, consistency of the backlighting and dimming being one of them, the look that it belongs etc. many of the current offerings arent really designed for putting in cars, they are designed to entice buyers who are attracted by bright flashing lights!
However, even if you organise inputs for your ipod(which is still going to cost you $), you are still going to have to mount the ipod on something to use it and be trying to manipulate the controls while you drive and read the tiny screen.
Units with full ipod control and usb input can be accessed for less than $200 now and presents a far more user friendly option. Yes, it will cost to get the steering wheel controls(I decided to go without), but I dont reckon that situation is going to last too long and either units with direct connect or affordable interfaces arent too far away.
hey thanks for the additional info guys, I had almost given up on this.
I've emailed phreddy@asr-audio.com.au so hopefully this will get a response.
I'll let you know how it turns out.
cheers
Hey Shack - apologies for not getting back to you, I am really busy at the moment. After being retrenched from my full time job - AGAIN - I'm now getting a lot more serious about ASR. I know, I know - if I'm serious I'll get back on emails - and to all waiting on responses I also offer my apologies.
The truth is that when one needs to set up a business "properly", there's a heck of a lot has to happen behind the scenes. Additionally in the short term I need to get a few roadshows out of the way to get the mortgage off my back, and perhaps set me up for a business loan. There's an extraordinary amount of prep that needs to go into a roadshow, make no mistake - it's not something for which I can just pack up and go.
Also, for those from here that do send emails - please give me some reference to your forum handle, otherwise I just don't know. I do spend a fair bit of time here, but for actual work enquiries I prefer the more formal nature of e-mail. The truth is that here you could literally be anybody - a formal e-mail address is more tangible.
Anyhow - Shack, I have sent a response recently to a person from Qld, it's possible that's you I guess. If it's not, please send an email to phreddy@asr-audio.com.au and I will get back to you. A trip to Brisbane is planned for the near future.
