Anyone have or have had any Earthquake gear?
seems to look like its good gear (especially the home audio) but have yet to find anyone that has any car audio.
Im keen on Boston Accoustic speakers so i was wondering how these compare with them (and the likes).
is it junk gear or respectable?
Earthquake has been around for ages, way before alot of brands available today. Their old stuff was TOP quality (for the day). I havent heard much of their latest stuff so i cant comment on that.
I dont think you could really compare Earthquake to Boston Acoustics......to my knowledge Earthquake focus more on high volume and SPL, and a little less on SQ. Whereas Boston are nearly all SQ in my opinion.
SPL stands for Sound Pressure Level.....measured in decibels (db).
There are basically two types of car stereo competitions. Sound quality, where a judge sits inside your car while you play a song at a moderate level, the judge then gives you a score on different aspects (sub bass, mid bass, treble, staging, imaging, appearance etc). Ive never actually competed at a SQ event so my knowledge is kinda limited.
Then theres SPL, which is all about bass. The "judges" place a microphone (or sensor now days) on the front pass. side window and close the door. You have 30 seconds to get the highest amount of bass from your system. The score will be shown in decibels.
Both types have several classes that allow for first timers, intermediates and experts.
Sorry to rave on, but i suppose theres alot of people who dont know what SPL and/or SQ is.
get focal or soundstream if u want good sound mate.
I used to deal with a mate who was a Earthquake Rep, i was in the position to get speakers custom made, so i had a set of shallow mount carbon cones splits made to suit the front of my VL, they were the sweetest fit ever and took some beating
Thanks for the explaination.
Im not into the whole doof doof sound, i prefer more of a quality clear sound throughout the whole range - which is why i enjoy Boston Accoustic i guess.
However though, without running a sub, it sounds like Earthquake still might be able to provide that sound im after.
or maybe a small sub if needed.
So you are planning on a system that dosent use a subwoofer?
By the sounds of it (youre listening preferences) i'd go with a set of Boston splits for the front, coaxials (at most) for the rear fill and a 10" subwoofer in a sealed box. Boston do make great subwoofers, but once again....sound is very personal. Listening to as many setups as possible is well worth the time.
My new ride with some upgrades.

I remember hearing some awsome systems that had Earthquake speakers, it was in it's day one of the best when used correctly. If I still had some of thier subs in good condition I'd be happy to use them although there is plenty of other brands around these days that would rate just as highly.
SPL and SQ ?, someone told me once the difference was like comparing drag racing to circuit racing, hence the term 'db drag racing'. (db meaning decibels, a measure of loudnes or SPL, sound pressure level). It's kind of sad to see that there are no SQ (sound quality) comps these days. I have competed in a few, many years ago, and I thought it was a lot of fun. Kind of like studying for an exam and then giving your paper to the teacher to be graded. It involved perfect speaker placement, getting your amp levels correct and matching your speakers to your amps, setting up your head unit. Not to mention the expertise needed to build the system. Lots of guys took great pride in getting great sound from the cheapest components by very careful and exact installation.
It's really a pity and I'll accept any flaming, but I don't think many of you guys here have actually ever heard a good sounding system, not one that just goes loud, but one that can actually play music the way it was meant to sound.

rate earthquake very well although with exhange rates it has got very pricey since i got my last sub (12 months ago)
i priced a set of speakers and they are still a crap load cheaper than the Bostons i bought in 2001.
on the topic of quality audio components, what other QUALITY sound producing head units are out there?
im NOT talking about your Sony, Alpine, Kenwood and the general population market brands that are found in every Autobarn, Repco, Supercheap type place either.
Im looking for the less known superior unit.
any good German brands for example?
or anything else that isnt main stream that is catering more towards a specialist market?
Try Eclipse, when i was doing car audio they produced a particular unit which had an all copper chassis, this unit was designed purely for Sound Quality and didnt have all the 'Bells and Whistles' that most people expect from a $1500-2000 head unit.......
Or try Blaupunkt they had alot of nice units that packed alot of punch especially power wise......... The particular one i have puts out 28.5 WRMS which is alot better than your pioneer, alpine etc especially for its time........ (4years ago)
cheers
Lets work as a TEAM and do it MY WAY!!
Clarion also had a copper-chassis SQ head unit too at one stage. Come to think of it either Pioneer or Kenwood had a no bells and whistles job too.
Eclipse make quality head-units too.
