Hi guys, I have got 2x 12inch subs (1200w if it makes any difference), anyway i have a VR and i was wondering how and where would be the best place to mount them for best sound? I was thinking of not boxing them just putting a board up in the boot so they mount facing the rear seats so i can fold down the middle seat. I was also thinking of mounting them either side of the boot behind the tail lights facing the middle back seat.
What would be the best way to mount them for sound? Any ideas are welcome!
cheers!

Although what he says is wrong, facing towards the rear of the car with the box behind the seats is one of the better mounting positions.
I've found mounting them at the rear of the boot facing forwards sounds the best to me
[edit - My comments are assuming you'd use a box. Free-air subs are made to be put on panels but they're not very common anymore. Normal subs go in boxes.]

who cares which way they are facing.... without a box they will sound like arse..
make a box, then try it both ways.... see which one you like
Yea, the boxes are designed specially for subs! There's a whole uni subject on box design.... So that there's isn't as much wave counteraction leading to sound waves cancelling each other out. (Hard to explain, Google it).
Ok so it will sound best if the subs are boxed? I will play around with it a bit, i want the subs facing the front of the car but i also want to be able to see them when you open the boot lol.

Why do you want them facing the front of the car?
Just because i can fold down the middle back seat of my car, wouldn't the sound travel into the cabin easier if it was like that?

yeah but you wont get as much "doof" factor. just for that pure bass to make music sound better keeping the seats up usually works a little better. thats from my xp anywho... my setup was pretty crap though..
edit: the seat also helps to filter out the sound of the subwoofer moving, which is a pretty nasty rattly sort of noise. one i couldnt escape on my ute.

Financial Crisis? What crisis? Fuels cheap and so are parts. I dont see no crisis.
So from your experience it sounds better if the subs are facing to the back and the seat is up?

Low frequencies travel through and around things quite easily, so the seats pose no problem for bass to get through. I couldn't honestly say I can hear a difference in the bass levels with the seat up or down... The only difference I can notice is that with the seat down there is less pressure being put on the parcel shelf so less vibration/rattle from the shelf.
my dual subs sound better facing towards the boot lid for the most punch. also gives alot more rattles but the extra bass is worth it imo
Oh ok thanks for that guys, I just assumed that it would sound better if they were facing the front lol.

Taken from a quick google search
And this oneTechnicaly speaking, the frequencies subs put out are unidirectional. However, that's not entierly the case(in a perfect environment, that would be totally true). Sub bass frequencies do bounce like mad off of almost any hard surface. The way your sub sounds depends on a few factors. Enclosure type, enclosure volume, sub type, and a few other factors I probably forgot to mention. Also, every brand and model of sub have different sound qualities.
Bearing this in mind, here's my suggestion.
Try either a homebuilt box or buy one. Just make sure you looked at the spec sheet for the sub and give it the propper volume and enclosure type for whatever sub it is. (make sure it'll fit in your trunk) Then, just experiment. It'll take a bit to figure out what works best. Everybody has different expectations as to what their subs should sound like, so it's pretty much a judgement call.
So I guess it doesnt really matter which way they are facing thenIt really depends on what effect you're looking to achieve. If you're looking for the traditional, booming sound then I recommend you point them away from the passanger compartment. If you're looking for a cleaner sound, the angle the speakers more towards the passangers.
Its all down to personal choice
If you point them to the rear its possible to find a 'sweet spot' where the waves reflected off the boot constructively interfere with the waves already traveling into the cabin, thus increasing their amplitude. High school physics!
Some actual technical information, rather than just regurgitating what people have read.
Aiming a woofer box in a car trunk - bass cancelation -
That was a very helpful write up, explained everything to me very well.
Thanks

So basically facing it towards the rear of the car like nearly everyone does. surprisingly maybe thats why everyone does it.
yeah i got my 2 12inch type r alpine subs facing the boot with a bit of dynamatting and it sounds great and the dynamatt really helps reduce the rattles
