Ive cracked it. Ive tried all these guides, nothing solves it. Im posting my system up here, ill detail all i can, if all else fails ill need to know places i can take it who will solve my engine whine, and by solve i mean fix it not use a band aid solution like a filter.
2 power cables running from battery, up the far side of the engine bay through the gromit down the side of the car into the boot to amp 1 and 2. The only wires the power cables go near are the speaker wires which run parallel to them from the speakers on that side, and the cables for the electric seats, plus whatever it passes under the steering column.
3 sets of RCAs (2 for speakers, 1 for sub) connect from the headunit (JVC KD-G735) along with a thin blue wire (remote) and go out the back where the head unit sits, through the glove box and down the passengers side. There are wires there for electric passengers seat but as my car is an VT Acclaim i don't believe they do anything. The RCAs run next to the speaker wires for the passengers side of the car, the RCAs are never near the power cables at any point.
Amps mounted side by side on back of sub box, with the ends that have where the power cables connect facing each other.
3 ground points have been trialled, all 3 being the seat belt bolts. I also think ive found where the head unit grounds (small black wire that connects in the passengers side area) which has been sanded back to bare metal.
So the 3 usually keys to eliminating engine whine, good ground, running the RCA and Power seperate, and setting gains, have all been done and no difference made.
Is there something else i could be missing? When i wired all the speakers to the amp i made sure all joints were soldered and taped up, but the person i bought the car from could have mucked up the wiring behind the headunit possibly where i cant see.
Also have used 2 sets of RCAs, one were Sony Xplod rubbish, currently have some quite good Stingers in there.
Will post pics tomorrow of how the amps sit just in case.
maybe you need a new condenser on the alternator.
That an interior or exterior piece?
external should be on the back of the alternator one wire connected to the alternator power wire and the body of the condensor is bolted to the alternator
where is your amplifier mounted? i had this problem and basically the amp was grounding itself to where i had it mounted onto. basically i just mounted the amp to a mdf board and bolted the mdf board to the parcel shelf.
Both amps mounted to the back of the sub box, when i play around with the gains and freq settings on the amps, along with the amp gain setting on the headunit, i can get the sound to quieten but never completely go.
I'm keen to see reply's as I have an identical problem
What type of head-unit are you using?
Maybe try to elimate the head-unit by using an external one or an ipod etc connected to the amp via RCAs?
If the noise is still there then its the amplifier/power wiring/alternator etc and not the head-unit/RCAs etc.

i also have a jvc headunit
Yep sorry i saw in his first post....JVC head-unit, hmm their not known for their noise issues but trying another head-unit out of the car or an Ipod plugged into the amp will atleast count out the head-unit/RCAs if it still makes the noise.

How does an ipod connect to RCAs? I have one at my disposal (my brothers) so ill borrow it later.
Amazingly last night there was no interference at all. Im strangely confused by this who situation. Basically it was horrible whine, i followed all the steps and still had it. Last night/this morning its gone. No explanation. Havent changed anything at all.
You can get a cable that is 3.5mm headphone jack to 2 x RCAs.
Have you changed the condensor on the back of the alternator? its a little cyclinder shaped object with a cable coming off it.

Where do i score one, how hard is installation? I saw the cable and it felt loose and wondered if that may be an issue.
You can get those adaptors just about anywhere, Jaycar/DSE will have them....hell i reckon Kmart will probably have some too.
You just need to plug the headphone socket into the Ipod then plug the RCAs into the inputs of the amp. Turn the car and Ipod on and play a song, get in the car and rev it up....see if theres any noise.
If you do go to Jaycar get a condensor while your there, installation isnt too hard.

Ill have a look, when i went to jaycar they had some filters, one of which had a thick red and thick blue cable in one end then out the other with terminals on the end. Meant to kill engine whine, but theres no instructions for it so have no idea where it goes or how it works.
I mean clearly its a filter, but thats basically all it says.
probably just an inline filter that connects to positive and negative before the headunit.
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
Its a filter that you amp power cable connects to at the battery (battery - fuse - filter -power cable to amplifier). It might work but its only a band-aid solution, youre much better off to fix the problem.
Heres the condensor im talking about:
Car Radio Suppressor - Jaycar Electronics

Do you have a photo of the condenser when it's attatched, as I have one and am not sure how to attach it.

It will be on the back of the alternator, screwed into place and the wire attaches to the + terminal (where the charge wire bolts on).
Sorry havent got a pic but you should see it there.
