Hey guys ive got a VY Calais in vespers metallic blue (dark metallic blue).
Anyways i had a run in with the garage door and managed to chip and scratch the top corner of my boot. I tried to fix it up myself with a good cut and polish bit of touch up paint and finally a wax.
End result wasn't too good. The paint, which i got from supercheap (PowerPlus), didn't match exactly with the original and now i have, in my opinion, a fairly noticeable blemish. Most people tell me not to worry about it cause its nothing but it bothers me and I want to get it fixed.
The damage consists of some slight scratch marks (I was a bit heavy on the cut and polish) and the difference in the paints, most noticeable in sunlight.
Basically I want to know am i best to just get the whole boot resprayed (~$300) or will a detailing/touch up place be able to fix it back to new.
Hopefully put a photo up in the next couple of days.
any input and help is appreciated,
Trev.
Being metallic I'd suggest you get the whole panel resprayed. And if you're leaving scratches in the paint when you polish, you're not doing it right.
I would say a body shop for a professional blended respray but post up some pictures and we should be able to advise further

Thanks for your help guys.
I do understand that leaving scratches in the paintwork isnt right but in trying to cut the paint right back, because I wasn't happy with it, I have left some pretty noticeable scratches. I also wasn't going in a circular motion rather just back and forward which is probably what did it.
I have also noticed that even the slightest amount of cut and polish (Kitten No.2 is what i use) tends to make the metallic paint look dull. I tend to just use Kitten No.1 wherever possible.
I have tried to attach some photos of the damage, i hope they work and I hope you can advise me further.
And yes i do realise that the car is filthy
Cheers, Trev.
This is from the Kitten website about their Cutting Polish:
"Caution: Not to be used on paintwork in good condition, or on newer cars with metallic paint or clear coat finishes."
This is from the Kitten website about their Cream Polish:
"DO NOT USE ON CLEAR COAT FINISHES."
The kitten range was made for older paints that do not contain clear coat finishes. I have seen 2 cars where owners have used the products and marked there paintwork badly.
Hope this helps.

Trev,
To me the repair is quite noticeable, it looks like a good car so save up and go to a good local body shop, maybe get 3-4 opinions and quotes but it will be worth it.
And like car products (polish) the cheapest is never the best - you get what you pay for so go with a guy that gives you quality information and you can see some quality cars going out, not the back street guy that has bits of cars everywhere and does not give you any information.
Cheers,
Mike

thanks for all your help Mike
Ive decided to go ahead and purchase an Autoglym Paintwork Perfection Kit after having a read up of it on your website, and in light of my recent discover regarding Kitten polishes.
Is this the sort of product/s I should be using on my metallic/clearcoat paint in order to buff out light swirls and scratches?
Also anyone used it before and can tell me how good/bad job it did on their paintwork.
Cheers, Trev.
I've found the Armor All butter wax to be a good product for buffing out scratches on my phantom metalic VY. It says clear coat safe on the bottle and web site. I also called them up to check and they said just don't go crazy with it. I've had the car about 15 monts and it had some pretty noticable scratches in the boot, bonnet and roof most of which I have mangaged to hide quite well.
Do you have any experience with this product Mike? I gather it s a wax not a polish/wax so should not be too abrasive.
Other than that I have been using Selleys Glide on Glaze Gen 2 every couple of months, good results and it can go on everything including rubber and protects that as well.
Yea looks like you need a respray on the boot
what about those guys that do spot repairs on paint, its like lube mobile except they drive out to you, it should'nt cost that much to do?
