just wondering peoples thoughts on the best products for removing swirls and very light scratches on black vy. I want to be able to remove them not just hide them but at the same time not use anything to harsh as the paint is actually in excellent condition. Any feedback will be appreciated
A few questions:
Hand polish or machine polish?
What is your budget?
Where are you located?
Is the whole car swirled?
Hand polish, budget isnt a problem, but within reason
I am in the Adelaide Hills, and the whole car isnt swirleand it does have a few very light marks from a car cover. Have been using tech wax, and since purchased duragloss sealant and zaino 8, these work well but just hide them i think. Thanks, Guru
Ive read a few good reviews on Meguiars Swirl X. I think you can get it from supercheap auto. Heres a few reviews ive been reading

Please explain how a non-abrasive polish is going to remove swirls. See if Mike at carcareproducts can sort you out with a sample bottle of Menzerna.

mike, please help
Email him.
see www.carcareproducts.com.au for contact details
Ask for a 250ml bottle of Menzerna. Tell him what you want it for and he'll recommend one. Or he may recommend something totally different.
Rotary + Edge pads + Menzerna = WIN!

Swirl x is abrasive, with Meguiars new SMAT technolog so will cut out some swirls. Ultimate Compound will also work. Lime Prime from Car care should work. THey are for hand. If using a machine the menzerna range is good.

Carecare,
What is your experience with Autoglym Paint Renovator ?
Every time you buy an over the counter Meguiars product, God kills a fairy. Please think of the fairies. And I'd recommend Menzerna over Autoglym and day.
lol what do you mean by that ? My kid loves fairies, so i dont wanna hurt them. I know Megs is over the counter, but it doesn't really mean that the product isn't good. Online sites sell the stuff the shops dont have simple. Doesn't necessarily mean one is better than the other. Fair enough if you talking about armour all, but MOthers, Megs, and Autoglym all make good things, and have a very wide range that people can benefit from paint to wheels etc. Now how broad is the Menzerna range for example that is available to us ?
Its like my cuzin telling me this and that is crap and he only uses Ferecla or maybe Menzerna on the odd occasion. Difference is, he works for Mercedes Benz as a painter, and i dont ! So i go for what is accessible to me.
The Meguiars professional range is good. The rubbish you buy in Autobarn and Supercrap is not![]()
Gunna bump this one up instead of starting a new thread.
I bought a variable speed, 1200W buffer that should be arriving tomorrow, and will be giving my car a good polish on the weekend. It's a dark blue car, with light swirls all over it, and some deeper scratches in 2 doors and a 1/4 panel that will (should) buff out (like someone has dragged a stone over it with a chamois).
What pads/polish would you reccomend?
I have a bottle of Scratch-X 2.0 and a tin of Polyglaze "cut and polish" sitting in the cupboard, and a bottle of Meguiars Mirror Glaze "speed glaze" at work that I could pinch for the weekend, or am I better off getting something better?
And the only pad coming with the polisher is a shitty-looking lambs-wool one. (180mm Velcro type)
Don't really want to spend more than about $50-100 for the time being
Oh, and as far as technique goes, one of the painters at work gave me a heap of tips and pointers, but I've never machine polished before.

Don't use P21S Paint Cleanser with a machine. Is it a rotary? I'm assuming it is judging by the power. The wool pad is for heavy cutting so will get rid of swirls but induce holograms. Did you get a Makita 9227CB by any chance?
180mm VARIABLE SPEED POLISHER - eBay Other, Cleaning, Car Care, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 24-Jul-10 08:50:25 AEST) Thats the one. It doesn't say whether its RO or rotary. I'm not too fussed either way. I know rotary is easy to stuff up, but I bought this car with the intention of using it to learn things like this, and I'll be doing a fair bit of paint correction professionally in a few years time

Yeah looks like a Makita knock off. You work at a panel shop so get a test panel and have a play. Best way to learn mate. Also take what your painters tell you with a grain of salt. While their info may be useful when you're starting off, panel shops aren't known for their great detailing efforts.
I'd go with the Meguiars speed glaze out of those 3 as ScratchX won't remove anything and the Polyglaze will contain silicone. You'll need another pad though. A 7" foam pad is going to cost around $30 though just for one. I ended up getting a smaller backing plate for my rotary so I could use 6" pads. Sold the 7" backing plate and wool pad on ebay.

Yeah, I have a couple old panels in the shed that I'll have a play with before attacking my car. I do the odd bit of painting on little bits at home, so the polisher will get a fair bit of use.
We use G3 compound at work as well, but I'd say thats a bit harsh for most of the swirls.
Any recomendations of a decent polish apart from the speed glaze? It'll save pinching it from work all the time.

I use Menzerna mainly. Something like Menzerna Final Finish PO85U would be good if you're looking for a one step.

If you are using the Rotary, the first item would be some 3M Masking Tape for the seals, rubbers, badges, corners... or they will be the first to feel the torque. the polisher you mention needs an M14 thread so this Backing Plate for Rotary is perfect and then combine with some foam pads. for light swirls maybe a polishing pad or light cut. I personally think that Festool Pads 6" are some of the best, but the Lake Country or Edge Pads are also very good and all will produce excellent results.
and as one of the guys mentioned Menzerna is one of the best ranges of polishes around because what you see at the end is what you get - no sneeky fillers like some that will wash out after a few weeks. PO85u is a good light polish and PO91L has got more cut for medium swirls and marks.
The other products you have are a waste of time, they will not remove, some will hide but you will be looking at the swirls or holograms again inside of a month
