Just washed my car and used a Meguiars Wash pad & Meguiar's Gold Class Car Wash -
I found I still had to use my nail to remove some spots of dirt and bugs. Am I not using enough elbow grease or should I try a different cloth / sponge / technique?
Any pointers appreciated.

Maybe try a clay bar set, it should pick up the tar and impurities off your paint then a pre-wax cleanser like lime prime. Just remember to apply a new coat of wax after. Hope this help

Thanks Drew, will give it a go next weekend. Are there any particular brands you'd recommend?
I picked up the Mint clay bar kit from CCP and some Dodo Juice " Need for Speed " , its a 3 in 1 product that cleans, preps and lightly waxes. Great product but im going to put a extra coat of stand alone wax over the top for extra protection.

I've already been once for some 303 Protectant so will be back soon.
Gonna try the Mint Grey Clay Bar Kit. After claying would Duragloss Aquawax be enough?
As for your wash pad query, Meguiar's have the lambs wool wash mitt which has an insect mesh thing on the back and it does a good job at getting anything like that off in your initial wash. The wool pokes through the mesh so you're not just rubbing cotton against the paint. There are probably better brands out there but the Meguiar's one I have does a good enough job that I haven't had a reason to upgrade to anything else yet.
