engine light problems

Hi All, this is my first post, hope someone can help me - I've recently bought a 98 vt hsv senator - it had some 'engine light' issues and it went to the local dealer and they seemed to fix it.My question is - does anyone know how the trip computer calculates the inst. fuel. use in the trip computer screen?? I'm guessing a combination of sensors sending signals to the pcm.My problem is the engine light comes on at random times, while its on, the inst. fuel. reads 0.0l/h when idling (normally 2 or 3.0l/h), or 0.0l/100km when driving. I'm trying to isolate a sensor or group of sensors to start with.If the enigne light is on when the engine is turned off - it will not even try to crank, no noise at all from under the hood. put it on a transporter to the dealer, they start it and drive it off the truck, yet couldn't start it to get it on the truck... loose connection in the loom somewhere maybe??I know there is a slight leak at the fuel regulator vent, but figured my problem is electronic, not fuel related.I haven't yet had a chance to get any codes out of it yet.Imagine the embarassment of having to push an HSV off the forecourt after filling up.Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.CheersMurray.

Mate firstly do the codes check and if it points to something nice and simple replace it alternatively if it was me I would take it back to the dealer, when you can get it to started and explain the problem and get them to fix it properly!. I assume you had them have a look recently so ask them wth is going on.
