when i bought my car it didnt have an antenna, in the mean time i got a steel coat hanger, bended it straight, stuck it in and it worked great, then i finally bought a replacement antenna and it has crap signal. but on really hot days when i start my car up it says it has better signal than usual. im stumped, earth was connected properly also.

When the aerial gets hot it'd be increasing in electrical resistance... which I thought would have lowered the signal quality? Is the new antennae electrically operated (up down) or just a static aerial? Have you checked the actual coax cable going from the head unit to the antennae... make sure the outer shielding hasn't been torn or pinched?
