water temp gauge question ????

i have got an after market water temp gauge and was wondering if it is mossible to tap into the original temp gauge. like is there a way i can just connect the positive to a wire on the original sensor instead of having to put a sensor in my radiator pipe

i would assume not, because the resistance of the senders is most likely different
