    Default Starter motor

    Hey,
just wondering if anyone knows how u would go about making a starter motor spin the other way.

wasnt sure where to put this, move it if u like, just thought it would have something to do with electrical stuff..

good question... 12volt would be able to answer that. i know you cant just swap the pos and earth cos they will need to remain the same to engage the solenoid. but from there i dont know!!!

curious, for what purpose is it to be used?

he is using it on a sand buggy using a volkswagen gearbox.

The internals of the starter motor virtually need to be rewired and rewound. OR you could simply insulate it AWAY from the body and the chassis of vehivle and apply positive to body of the starter and an earth to positive terminal on it. THEORETICALLY this would cause the motor to spin the other way.
You put you left foot in, your put your right foot in , you take your left foot out and you slide it all about!

no scrub that idea, it wouldn't work at all. the ring gear is earthed as is the bellhousing around the motor. I was thinking of an alternator for some reason....don't know why, it doesn't spin independently.

A starter motor is a "series" motor, ie the armature is connected in series (in line?) with the field windings. To reverse the rotation u have to reverse the connections on either the field windings OR the brushes - not both. There's not much room in there so could be very difficult. The pinion (drive) is made to work one way only, so that wouldn't work in reverse.
I would approach the s/motor makers, as I am sure they could build you one - maybe.
