fault code 31 theft deterrent signal missing

Aftermarket Alarm system doesn't use old key button anymore.
However it is causing probs with new coded key.
Old key still locks/unlocks doors but chk engine light stays on.
Fault code 31 keeps coming up..
This car is a couple of attempts away from TOW and TORCH!!!!
( I may just settle down before then.)
