Replacing in-glass radio aerial with bee-sting.

Like a few cars these days, the Captiva has the radio aerial moulded into the rear hatch and rear side glass and the reception in regional areas like where I live is very ordinary. Those aerials might be ok in Europe or Asia where the distances between radio stations isn't that great but in Aus, they are a stupid idea.

Can anybody advise me whether it is practical to install a bee-sting type aerial on the car and whether the connections between the aerial and the existing wiring would be compatible?
