G'day people..

I've tried googling this, but can't find a nice easy explanation..

I've got a VR V6 commodore.. The exclamation light's started coming on tonight & the car's just generally acting a bit weirder than normal. It seems electrical; the lights inside & out are going dim, the CD player quit, and the car was a bit revvy, if that makes any sense? (yeah, bet you can tell i'm no mechanic now)

there's also a clickity noise rather like a relay going off it's nut, seems to be coming from under the dash. So i open it up, and look - 4 relays. The first, third and fourth make sense, and don't seem like they'd be the culprit, but i'm buggered if i can work out what HTD RR WDO means, so i've no idea if it's responsible, or just another symptom of something else going wrong..

any ideas?

cheers,
swaz

Heated rear Window - aka rear demister.

Your symptoms sound like a faulty voltage regulator on your alternator.

As above.
If the alternator is not supplying a charge, or a minimal one, it will have that effect as you've described.
Things will start to shut down (higher current draw components first) and the battery will go flat as the car's electrical system will use the power
from the battery, until everything dies.

Relays will carry on like that, when there is not enough voltage to power them properly, especially on a high current circuit such as rear window demister.

Also check that the battery cables are tight on the battery and the cables are making good contact with the battery terminals.
The charge fusible link could also be worth checking out.

Put a volt meter across the battery when the engine is running. It should be around 14.2 volts, give or take a point.

replaced the alternator, no dice. seems to have turned out to be a broken earth lead between the negative battery terminal and the side of the engine bay... glad i didn't shell out for a new alternator at $181.. :)
