VN V8 - Offroad Buggy
HI Guys

I have a V8 Vn engine in my off road race buggy.
I have everything wired through a negative earth kill switch, (one side of the switch is wired directly to the battery the other side to every earth in the buggy even the block. All the positives go from the battery to some fuses and realays
I had a old alternator that I never wired up as it was not working properly.
I have just purchased a 120 amp one ,
I wired it up to go directly to the battery, it worked perfectly, 14.5 volts, 12.5 volts at idle.
The problem is it wont tun off, I turn the kill switch off and it kept going. I had to earth out the battery to the chasiss to stop it (happend as an accident when I was removing the battery).
I remove the lead going to the new alternator and it starts and stops fine when I turn the kill switch.
We have tried earthing out the alternator, this did not stop when I turned the kill switch off.
Do any of you guys have an idea if what is going on?
One of the auto guys said that I should run a wire from the alternator (screw under the main supply lead) to 2.2 watt globe and to my ignition system?
Let me know what you think as i am confused.
Thanks and looking forward to your replies and ideas.
Marc

you are not killing power to the engine only taking the earth off the battery.you can take the battery out with car running and the alternator will keep it running.i normally wire them positive kill and only leave the alternator charge wire all the way to the battery.doing what you are doing will fry the ecu with no battery connected

As above, you can't stop the engine with a negative kill switch with an alternator in the system. You have to cut power, not earth.

Don't know how much damage you'll do to the ecu, would not have thought it an issue (been wrong many times before! ) but it will definitely pop the diodes in the alternator.

HI guys

Thanks for the input
So if I also place a kill switch on the positive powering the whole system it will shut off?
if so this will be the easiest way to stop the engine for me!
Or should I place a kill switch on the wire going from the alternator to the battery to shut down the system?
looking forward to your replies

setup the switch to kill all positive but keep the alternator charge wire direct to battery.if you fit it on the other side of the switch it will still feed the whole car even with it off

Excuse my ignorence and help me understand it better
I have the battery with one positive wire running to the starter, one positive wire running to the alternator and one positive wire running to power up everything else.
How should i kill the system.
Appreciating yur input Marc

Why not put a switch on the trigger side of the ECU/Engine Control Relay.
Relative low current, so you wont need a big arse switch.

Or, if the VN engine has it.
The external tacho wire.
On the VT 5 litre, it runs off the main loom near the left side shock tower.
Earth that out (as I found out accidentally) and the engine will not run at all.
