    Question Trip Computer

    Hello,
Just after some advice to get the trip computer getting the correct readings on my VH SL/E. It doesn't always update seams like the readings cut in and out.

Sometime it will give you the readings no worries and others it just plain gives you the wrong info like e.g - 500k's of petrol left when only 1/4 of a tank & the fuel consupmtion seams to work and not work. Any ideas and I hope this is in the right section. Thought it was electrical.

    Cheers.

If its digital (Which it sounds like) my only advice is to reset it (d/c) batt for 20 min usually does it. With regards to an analouge trip comp (this prob aint u) but mine in the vk stopped years ago (only done 177000!!! , nah nah driven to church and back once a week honest)

    Disconnecting the battery won't help....

Your fuel flow sensor is stuffed - just like most of the flow sensors fitted to VH, VK V8, WB Statos & JB camiras are also stuffed.

What is happening is not all the fuel flowing thru the sensor is being measured & that reading being fed back to the processor.

Your DTE fuction is related to the previous few minutes of instant fuel consumption, and the level of the tank.

If the measurement of fuel flow is somewhat less than true consumption, the DTE figure will go very high.

You can see the fuel flow sensor playing up if you set it to instant reading while driving. It should hover between 5 & 20 when cruising (up to 50+ when accelerating hard in a 308) and when slowing to a stop a few high figures will flash up before 0 is shown.

If it doesn't read steady figures (up/down a few points is fine) while driving at a constant speed - ie if it drops to 0 then back up to 9.0 etc, then the fuel flow sensor or it's wiring are at fault.

Generally though, it's the sensor that's stuffed.

You can't buy them new anymore, so it's a matter of looking around for a good working 2nd had one.

The sensor has 3 tubes & 3 wires (red black & white) going into it.
It's fitted to the snout of the carb on a V8 SL/E (behind the thermostat housing), and near #1 plug on a 3.3L.
