Hi all,
decided to start on our Vr wagon,
it had everthing rebuild about 3 yrs ago, and was running fine, decieded to take it off road about 1yrs ago,to do it up a bit,
after 3mths idel, not been started, i charged up battery, put fuel in, and smoke started coming from engine bay, as soon as the terminal was put on,
then turned alternator over by hand, and the short /smoke had stop when i put terminal back on.
then Fan come on when reds did, and car cranks but no fire,
-i have swapped the relay around, this stopped fan coming on,
but their is no spark,
im not sure if im testing correct, im just using an old plug to lead,on earth, and cranking.old style testing.
im sure it has fuel also, as their is volts to injector plug.
We now will be using the wagon as a family hack, as our 3rd child will be due in a few months
all help would be greatly appriciated
Cheers

Hmmm. Signal at the injectors means you should be getting fuel. But no spark. Spark comes to spark plug through the leads from the coil packs and dfi module. Maybe check the connector on the side of the dfi module and maybe swap it. Will have a read of the gregorys tomorrow if no one can help you out.
thanks mate, when you say swap DFi plug, not sure what you mean?
yer, i can even hear pump prime, and smell fuel after cranking..
very puzzled, was going fine...
I undid the DFi plug and a full circuit was from efi relay to red on dfi plug?
is their any way to Test either coil packs or DFi Unit correctly?
All i have is a digital multimetre.
Cheers
You can measure the primary and secondary resistance of the coils using the resistance feature on the multimeter. No way of testing the dfi module though. Your best bet may be to find a friend with a commodore. I think the dfi module and coil packs are the same from the VN series 2 right through to the VY (dont quote me on that though), or see how much a wreaker is wanting for the module and coils. Will have a look in the gregorys and find the other things to check.
Ok, so were there any error codes? How old are the plugs and leads?
Gregorys says that if all of the leads fail to spark, to disconnect the dfi connector on the side of the dfi module and put your mulitmeter, set to volts, between terminal P (not sure what that is, maybe marked P on the connector) and ground. Switch the ignition on and you should see the battery voltage displayed on the multimeter. You can actually take the coil off, connect a test lamp between the primary terminals on the dfi module and crank the car. The test light should light if there is power at the primary terminals on the dfi module.
Gregorys goes into a bit of detail on testing the crank angle sensor signal but the procedure is fairly detailed and it would probably be easier to grab a copy of the gregorys to follow it all step by step. Your local library should carry a copy if you dont want to purchase one.
Still interested to know what the problem is, so let us know when you have it solved.
Hi mate,
did a test on volts to dfi, everything look perfect, but still no spark,
so i found a guy in the lacal paper wreaking one, swapped the dfi and coil for a case,
and she fired up ,no problem, 1st go.....only wish i started fixing ages ago...
thanks heaps mate for all the help, will be keeping my eye out for a manual still.
Thanks once again,
Cheers
Chris
Nice work mate. Good to hear problem solved.![]()
